I do'nt definitively know. I can only advise on the basis of probability. The 5V/12V compontns would only be electrically damaged as per burning smell if there was a surge from the main power supply. So I doubt that there are any low voltage components that are damaged. That's why you shuld either ignore it (as per Dal's words) or satisfy yourself that it was just glue settling near/at the power supply.
Without liability, I doubt that there's anything further wrong now. If in doubt take the PS2 back to your #####r. |

Well, I opend the PS2... I can't believe I did that.
I mean, I'm opening computers all the time, but opening the PS2... Anyway, I haven't found any problems, no smell, no melted glue, no nothing. The thing is, as comferting as this might be, I have a real problem. I first noticed it a couple of days ago playing "Shadows of Memories", but now I played Time Crisis 2 (Both games original) and I noticed this problem again. When some sounds are played, there's a distortion sound, really strong one, but only for specific sounds. It happens for loud sounds mostly, but never happens with music, which makes it really strange. I tried connecting the PS2 to another TV - Same problem. The distortion is really annoying (Happens on every volume level) and prevents a clear sound for the specific sounds I'm talking about. Could this be an PS2 internal sound component problem? I'm panicing here, so please answer fast... |

If you have an identified irregularity, tae the PS2 back to your #####r with the game concerned. Let him prove it out on his PS2 and then if the sound is OK on his PS2 he can fix yours.
There's no more I can do than advice this. Are you going to try Cheesy's trick? |

That's a small problem I have with the retailer...
I installed a chip! which means - Warrenty Expired!!! Do you have a practical suggestion of how to check this myself? Thanks. P.S - I'm NOT going to try Cheesy's suggestion because of the following reasons: 1>I don't have Action Replay. 2>I don't have any DVD-R's yet. 3>After what happend, I don't think I'll ever try that again. |

Sorry - no. I have no idea of the internal circuitry of the PS2 board from that point of view.

My son is a treasure. Rather than just walk away from your problem I consulted his experience about sound problems. Not discounting that something's gone wrong in your PS2, he says that he can reproduce the same problem in several games and this is associated with hearing concurrent disk activity - like the next sound is on the next disk sector. Is there an associated disk sound?

M8,
Could it be a faulty scart lead. plug the 2 audio phono leads into stereo that has can output these, and see if you get the same problem, if so maybe try one of my fantastic finds a BLAZE lead which might solve your problem, i have many games now and i have never come across this problem, noisey cd rom YES but not bad sound effects from a video game it must be the lead or the ps2 NOT the game your trying to play. Cheers Dal Dal

Charlie, I don't understand, what do you mean "disk sector"??
Dal, Well, I tried without the SCART lead, but it still does it. You say you have many games. Do you have Time Crisis 2? If you do, try loading stage 2, and watch the Stage 2 intro. Right after the big guy smashes his cell phone, the heroes come by car. When the car arrives, I hear the distortion sound. Also, when they get back in the car, the car drives down the mountain and that's when I can hear that distortion really bad. Can you check out how you hear that? |

Another example is when Playing Devil may Cry, in the underwater stage, if you shoot the needle gun a few times in a row then it distorts.

Gunblade, a disk sector is a small piece of information. A lot of disk sectors make up the rest of the information and the sector is the unit of access on the DVD drive of the PS2.
Now you say there's a lot of drive noise. If that's at the same time as your sound distortion, then that occurs because of a sort of data under-run; the next piece of sound doesn't arrive at the right time to maintain continuity. You might yet have had a problem in your drive (although I doubt it) when you smelt burning. That circuit might be a higher voltage. That's four screws to remove and you could have a look and a smell there. Finally, are these rented games? If so have a look for scratches and other blemishes. You said that the CDCheck program reported no errors - that's just a guide because it's a different laser etc. If Dal has the time to play through to the point you suggested (!!!) |

Charlie!
Wow, that was a fast answer ![]() Anyway, No. There is no sound (not nothing unusual anyway) from the CD drive. Only from the game. The CD's are not rented, so I think that's not the case, because there are no scratch marks. Oh man, what could that be? It's killing me to think I'll have to exchange my PS2.. It could take a freakin' month!!! |

And you could look into the DVD drive - but we do seem to be moving towards taking the thing back to your #####r and getting his advice (unless he is useless and doesn't have a qualified geek that does modchips etc). Did you put a capcitor in anywhere when you fitted your modchip? |
