Can 360 games be backup or not?
Okay sorry but I seem a little dense here, but the stickeys on this forum seem a little out of date.
I've got tons of kids. These kids are young and they break and destroy theirs and my toys. Most notably they destroy game disks. I sold my systems that I can't backup the disks a long time ago. For the past few years I have had success with my original Xbox and soldered in a mod chip. The kids the games off the HD. And I put the orignal on the shelve. (We don't do xbox live) Now some simple question: 1) Will the mod chips out there for 360, allow me to make a backup of my original game and then play it? I wanna put the original on a shelve as my kids destroy my crap too often. 2) How are backups done? For original Xbox I had to FTP to a 'puter on the network, and then copy back to the HD or burn a DVD. It is the same type of process for 360? I ask because if I can't make a backup reasonabley easy then I am not going to buy 360. thanks |

Well....
1. As far as I know, there are no modchips yet, but there are ways to get around it....YOu can FLash the Dvd drive if you are lucky to know how and not FRAG it....check out xbox-scene for details. 2. Only certain burners can burn them I think, but you hook your computer to the dvd drive of the 360 and basically copy the game over...the other details are fuzzy, as I have not done mine yet and feel no need to look at it further until I do. Sucks though....I am sure more will chime in and help....But it can be done...You CAN play online with backups so far......Everything will have to be on dvd9 whether or not the game warrants such a disk......HTH

I would stay away from backups unless you know what you are doing and a PC knowledgeable. You either have to flash your DVD drives firmware, or buy a replacement flash chip so you can switch between the 2.
Backing up games require you to have a compatible serial controller hooked up to your PC. Ones that are not compatible may destroy the drive. You can search the net on which chip sets work or not. Unless you have a special power adapter for the x360 drive, you will have to use the x360 for power. Basically, you hook the data cable to your PC and the power to the x360. After you get your drive hooked up to your PC, you have to use utilities to flash its firmware. Once that is done, you can put the drive in a specific mode in order to to get some security id's. You then use the drive to copy the disk, you must use software where you can specify sectors of the disk to copy. You must then patch the images with your id's, this will allow the game to boot to your DVD drive (nobody elses). You can then burn the image to a DVD9.

HDD? I assume you mean Dvd-Drive. Anyways, you can either open your 360 and read the sticker on the top, or look at the dvd tray shape. Note that you still need to look on the sticker of the drive to see what version drive is.
Here is a link to a tray comparison: http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/Xbox_3...Comparison.htm

To copy update the firmware and copy games, the dvd drive will need to be hooked up to your PC. The x360 can not run unsigned code, it is only "tricked" into thinking that the disk itself is signed by MS. If you modify the binary data in any way, the binary signatures will become invalid. The complete disk must also be copied, including null sectors. You must burn to a dvd9, it will not fit on a dvd5.
Common files/hardware: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=546894 Tutorials from X-S: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=513412 Sorry, I don't know what drive you have. Search that titorial topic for your version and current firmware. Also, look at this thread here: http://fileforums.com/showthread.php?t=78240 This drive can have special firmware applied so you do not need to copy with your x360 dvd-rom.

I don't think you realise how limited this mod is. It doesn't matter if it is an x360 or xbox game, you still need to copy complete sectors of the game disks in order to play them. If you have backups from your original xbox, don't expect them to work. You will need to recopy everything, as well as patch the images with your dvd drive's specific keys.

That link contains all firmware versions and guide for flashing your specific drive. The only thing required is a working sata adapter. All hardware you need can be found in the first link I posted.

Some SATA chipsets could brick you dvd-drive.
This list was taken directly from one of the links I gave you: VIA VT 6421L PCI SATA Card This card is the best PCI SATA card for flashing the Samsung drive. It can also be used to "bad-flash" an MS28 without soldering.
