Spyro YOTD (is this how you do it:)

I am new to patching psx games. I installed a mod chip a few months ago (7 wire no switch, USA) for my kids and the only game we have ever bought that wouldn't run on the modified psx is Spyro YOTD.
I have CDRWin, among others, so I made an image file, Spyro3.bin, on my hard drive. I downloaded a couple of patch files from psx copyworld. two different .ppf files, and a .p4u patch file. Then I downloaded the appropriate patch engines for each patch. The only patch I could get to work on my machine (IBM PC SCSI custom build) was pdx-sp3c.zip with ppf 2.0 by Icarus. I hope this helps others.
Like I said I have the original and this is how the patch works for us. I don't know if it's supposed to because I have never done this before.
I patched the spyro3.bin file and the patcher said it was successful.
I used CDRWin to burn the image on a disk. CDRWin froze the two times I tried this and the progress bar never went above 0% copied.
after about 5 min my computer re-booted (I did this twice). When I put the cd's in the psx there was a program that bypassed the modchip protection allowing the start sequence of Spyro YOTD. I then have to remove the patch CD and continue with the original CD...My whole purpose for this detailed post is to ask..is this how it's done..is it supposed to be this way? I do know the game works now and it didn't used to. Sorry for taking up the bw...please post here and tell me what I should have done to make a better patch..I thought the patch and the game should be on the same disk?

Well what a load of crap in the replies so far! Well here goes.
Basically to stop people from chipping their PSX, programmers have put little bits of code in the boot sector which actually scans your PSX and says, HOW DARE YOU, YOU'VE GOT A CHIPPED MACHINE, and the legitemate game stops. Bummer Uh! anyway, they have got the 8 wire chip called the stealth chip, failling that buy a nice writer like a Yamaha, some decent disks, and back them up & patch them, then if the disk gets damaged you can make another. CDRWin in the best for patching, as long as your writer can read in raw mode. Have fun with Spyro, now that is a game worth buying!

I copied Spyro3 (PAL/GER) and using the BAD-Patch; Game runs, but if you load a Game, it hangs. Anybody with the same Problems?
