IMHO ram can be found real cheap in these days. Sure it is about what you are aiming for but like Corsair Value S. 2x512 costs almost nothing, and 2x1gb of those is a killer deal. Only bad things is that the timings could be better and the overclockability is very lacking. Still nice set of RAM.

Getting top-of-the-line mem won't cost that much either IMO.
Bought 2x1GB RAM Corsair TwinX PC3200 2-3-2-6 specified and they work wonderful in 1T paired with my A64 3700+... Love them...

ECC stands for Error Correcting Code btw, its not neccessary, but is kinda nice to have, however unbuffered ECC RAM is had to find. If you want more info, resort too google, as im tired and don't feel like explaining it any further :P Also not the subcategoried of the RAM types, which are SDRAM and RDRAM. SDRAM = Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory, and RDRAM = Hell if i know, i just know that it fails, don't buy it. Unbuffered has slightly more bandwidth, although it's not good with servers as it require more electrical current, thus less modules can be used on 1 motherboard. Also, there is some slight price differences btw 184-pin RAM and 200-pin RAM

QUALITY: Should be self-explanetory

SPEED: lessee, the speeds are PC2100, PC2700, PC3200, and PC4000 (or, these are the common ones anyways), and these can also be found in Dual channel kits, giving speeds such as the common DDR400. You also need to consider the timings, high performance RAM with timings of 2-2-2-5 will cost more than valueRAM with timings of 2.5-3-3-7 (my RAM )

PC3200 is DDR400 its the same. Its like ISP speeds, you know how ISP's love to advertise they are 10mb/s but in reality its 1.25MB/s. Its same with Ram PC3200 is 3200/8 = 400. Aha.

Not everyone is computer savey as most people, so will call a tower a "Hard Drive" when I see people like that I tell them the difference.

Its the same, when at the same its not. If you have one stick, then its not DDR400, you must have 2 sticks in dual channel to have DDR400.

And i forgot to mention the size (doh!), that's the biggest influence on RAM prices :O 512MB cost about half as much as 1GB. and 1GB is obviously alot less than 2GB (more than half as much).

1GB is cheaper than 2x512mb. Its to encourage people to buy the 1GB.

And some motherboards will use the full 400 for 1 stick.

It is nearly impossible to get a bus speed of 400 MHz without dual channel (that would mean your RAM is running at the speed of PC6400!). You would have to double the bus speed manually, which normally makes it incredibly unstable (not to mention would probably break your RAM, i would imagine that you would need to up the voltage to about 5v at least). Also, to change your bus speed on your ram, you need to change the FSB of your cpu as well (or just bus speed if your AMD) and change the overall frequency of your CPU (and drop the multiplier too).

btw, i was just referring to one stick in my last post, not dual channel kits. And yes, the price for dual channel kits are coming down considerably (yay!)
