Do the DC's in the US stores today play backups?

I see that Sega is dropping the price to $49.95 after Thanksgiving. Do they play backups?

Hell no... its pretty unlikely that you'll find any of the rare pre-oct2k models right now.

it doesn't

USA's Drean Cast doesn't play backups unless you use a boot disk, with this boot disk you can play any backup of DC, hey and remember say no to piracy )

Beto, I think you're insane.

I have a USA Dreamcast as do many other people, that plays bootable backups **** WITHOUT **** a boot disc.

Newer (post Oct/2000) USA Dreamcast machines will **ALSO** read copies without a freakin' boot-disc. The catch is the bootable discs must be assembled differently than the older ones.

What you're describing is using a bootdisc to play EUROPEAN and JAPANESE games on a USA Dreamcast. This is true, but it's no big freakin' deal.

Just in case anyone was wondering:

I just went to Best Buy in Dallas TX USA on Saturday night and they had a stack of Dreamcast games. I checked the one on the top of the stack (looked into the little window in the box) and found a JUNE-2000 unit right off the bat. If this is any indication, most people who are in the market for an older-style Dreamcast (pre-PROTECTED model), should have no trouble finding one prior to October 2000 manufacture date, at least in the USA.

If you bought it at Best Buy, take it back to the store you got it from (tell 'em "I don't want it" or whatever you feel comfortable with). Then take the cash up to the Best Buy on IH 635 & Midway Rd. That's where I found a June-2000 unit right off the bat.

Depending on how long you've had it, this may not work for you (time limit for returns), and you may also be able to take it back if you got it from other retailers.

You'll probably have a 50:50 chance of getting a unit that works with backups if you get a 10/2000 unit. Maybe slightly worse odds than that.

OK, so what if I just bought a dreamcast like a week ago?
Do I need to go through the mess of converting the boot cd?
Cause I tried that and I can't exactly get it converted right...
I'll see if it works or not, hmm....

I read in a faq that the cut off was November 2000 and that only some of those had the new firmware/bios which made them not read cd-r/self-boot games.

Is there a list of system serials that plays back-ups? I found a 11/2000 system but not sure if I want to buy it or not incase it can't play self-bootable's.

Okay, the one I have is November 2k and it works great, no problems reading all the cdr games I have (not self booting, I use the boot disk).
As far as copying them, I just opened up Adaptec and hit copy, now as far as self boot games, I still haven't figured that one out, anybody got any help? (I have ez cd creator and Disc Jugller 3.0)
