ok i found out what the solder protection is, its a little ball of solder on the back side of the laser (next to the voltage screws) but heres the crap. i removed the solder as best i could and it plays my orignal ps2 games but not backups! i checked all the wires for the modchip and there all in tact still so i emailed the place who sold me the laser and asked them why it only plays orignal games and not backups? was there still some solder i didnt remove whats the reason? they basically told me "lasers are not guranteed to play backups, as long as it plays originals dont worry" i dont understand why my old laser that came with the ps2 played backups and this is the same exact model laser and this one doesnt. i just dont know why it wont, i cant figure it out

You need a multimeter to check the pots. Check out www.cyber-mag.com If they are set wrong it can burn up the new laser.

woo hoo. Top job.
I've changed more than a few lasers and have had a couple of duff ones so good to hear yours is fine. The solder blobs are anti static protection during transit. Basically until the laser has the connections plugged onto it there is no ground so if you're charged up and you touch the laser theres a chance that the static on you could damage sensitive parts of it. The solder blobs ensure that any spark it gets don't go anywhere near the sensitive parts. Regards
