Anybody successfully created a backup of Matt Hoffman Pro BMX?

Anybody successfully made a backup of this game?

So far I've only managed to create coasters...it just hangs after the load screen.

Got any ideas?

Thanks.

I have made two copies of it without error. Do you have a released version? Or did you or someone you know rip it?

And do other backups play on your DC?

did you rip it yourself? i ripped it, downsampled the SFDs and hacked the BIN file but it detects that it's not an original and then it goes to the DC setup menu. i did notice that when i ran dahack on MAIGO.BIN it didn't modify it (i only found 2 bin files 1st_Read.bin and maigo.bin)

yes other backups works flawlessly on my DC (April 2000). i've done many backups but i'm a little stuck on matt hoffman. any help will be appreciated.

Maybe MAIGO.bin is not the file you're needed - I mean usually it's ip.bin to be hacked, but maybe someone decided to rename it. Open it with the hex editor and look for the head: SEGA KATANA...
If so - then it ip.bin, if not then there's no sence of your hacking. If the image goes already bootable - then ip.bin is hidden as a bootstrap and there's some problems to scratch it out. But, as I say earlier - I've burned about 20 games using ip.bin from another game (Space Channel 5) and it works fine. If the game has two sessions, just extaract all the files from ihe disc, take ip.bin from any of your game and made it self-boot by yourself and I'm sure you've got a working copy....

may bad.....the other bin file is actually GINXFER.BIN and NOT MAIGO.BIN as i said earlier. also there are 3 BIN files not 2.... d'oh!! (IP.BIN, 1ST_READ.BIN and GINXFER.BIN) i was backing up another game that had maigo so i got confused sorry.

what i do is run DAHACK first on all BIN files (except IP.BIN) then BINHACK on 1ST_READ.BIN and IP.BIN. GINXFER.BIN was not modified when i ran DAHACK on it. i'm thinking that maybe the problem with my backup.

when i try the game on the DC it boots and after the logo screen it sits for a little while then it somehow detects it's not an original and then exits to the DC menu.

i guess that's the problem....what file(s) do you hack to stop the game from detecting it's not an original?

if you ripped MHPBMX yourself and created a working backup how did you do it?

How worth is Matt Hoffman's compared to Dave Mirra's?

You need to modify only ip.bin and 1st_read.bin, not others....
If you made it with binhack it totally changes ip.bin and only one number in 1st_read.bin (this number goes as a sector number of the 1st session + 300 sectors or so for the bootstrap). There was the time when we made it by our hands with hex workshop Again I repeat: if the game refuses to burn it's image so the best way is to made it manually by extracting all the files and if needed make it bootable or adjust all you want (music, logo etc.)....

Don't use any hack with others .bin's exept ip.bin and 1st_read.bin. As you can see this DAHACK was too clever not modifying another .bin. It's normal cause it don't nee to be changed.

The best way if you describe all your manipulations when making the image step by step and what tool-kit you're using (from echelon or what?). It would be easier to catch the problem.

thanks for your input i really appreciate it.

all i did after ripping the MHPBMX GDROM disc is downasample the FMVs and then follow Echelon's method. i use DAHACK on the bin files to make the proper offsets in the iso file. on almost all games that i've made a backup of i had to use dahack on all bin files to make the backup copy work.

the tools i used are:

- extract.exe (to extract files from ISO)
- cdrecord (burning image)
- dahack.exe
- binhack.exe
- ipins.exe

i have no problem in creating the iso image and burning it. as i said before....it boots but the game detects that it's a copy and resets to the DC menu. i'm trying to find out how to get around this copy detection thing in the game. i read Echelon's .NFO file for Matt Hoffman's (from isonews.com) and they didn't mention if there's anything else they did apart from downsampling the FMVs. there's a couple of other things i haven't tried but i'm really frustrated now as i've created few coasters already just trying to get around this copy protection. got any ideas?

thanks. - Pogs

NO!
some games need more hacking!!! many games have an maigo.bin that also must be hacked! some games has other bins whitch must be hacked. you found out whitch they are when you hack it and the programm (dahack or hack3 or whatever) do something, if not this bin donīt must get hacked!!

Now to you Pogs:
in that what you say, i would say that you have done all right!
now what could it be that it donīt works?
you said you have downsamled some stuff, how much? have you the cd-r given an few MBīs overhead? if not, the game couldnīt selfboot this could be your problem! try to downsample a few MBīs more (i think 5 - 10) follow echelons selfboot method again, burn again and try out, maybe that could help you, if not explayn me exacly what you have done whith the data, EXACTLY every point!

ok here's exactly what i did:

- ripped the GDROM with DC coders cable using TerraTerm and DCRIP.

- got 3 tracks in the end - track03.iso.gz, track04.raw.gz and track05.iso.gz

- used eo to extract the iso and raw tracks.

- extracted the iso with "extract.exe" (extract track03.iso track05.iso 548718 <--sector of last track from Terraterm)

btw, all games that i've ripped had a short first track (track03) and then the audio tracks (if CDDA) and then the main data track. MHPBMX had it's main data track as the first (track03) and the last track (track05) is the short one. i don't know if that makes any difference but i just thought i mention that just in case that info may be of use.

- after the files have been extracted. i took out IP.BIN, 1ST_READ.BIN and GINXFER.BIN from the DATA directory (Selfboot Toolkit).

- i downsampled all the SFD files using MPEG2VCR to DeMultiplex it, Cinepack to convert the .ADX files to .WAV and then DC Movie Creator to encode the downsampled movies (rates are - video: 2100 kbits/sec , audio:22050Hz, MonoL+R)

original total size of all the SFD files were 539MB and after downsampling the new total is now 298MB which is ok because everything will now fit in 80min CD-R (approx 675MB total).

- using Echelon's tutorial i burned the first session on CD-R (AUDIO.RAW) using cdrecord.

- got the MSINFO number from cdrecord which in this case was 11702.

- ran DAHACK on 1ST_READ.BIN and GINXFER.BIN (dahack binfile 11702) but dahack only modified 1ST_READ.BIN and ignored GINXFER.BIN. i remember one of the games i ripped before (can't remember the title tho') had ginxfer.bin as well and dahack modified it.

- BINHACK on 1ST_READ.BIN and IP.BIN.

- copied over the modified 1ST_READ.BIN and the untouched GINXFER.BIN back to the data directory.

- created the data iso using mkisofs.exe

- inserted the bootstrap IP.BIN into the data iso using IPINS.EXE

- burned the created data iso as the second track on the CD-R.

- tried it on the DC....it boots but after the S**A logo screen the game somehow detects that it's a copy so it resets to the DC menu.

well this is pretty much what i do to make a backup and they all work like a charm. this is the first time i got stuck. i'm sure more hacking needs to be done but i don't know how to do that. so any help will be great.

thanks again!

i just tried manually changing the values in 1ST_READ.BIN using a hex editor but that didn't work either. i changed CDE4 436A to 0900 0900 and 1032 0D8B to 0800 0D8B.

if anybody has downloaded the Echelon release of MHPBMX if you could send me all the BIN files (zipped) so i can play around with this some more.

here's my email pogs2k2**********com

thanks.

yeah i've been to ripDB too but found no useful info. also tried searching around the web some but came up empty. i'll try the irc as you suggested. i really want to make a backup of this game because my nephew is not very gentle with the CDs. so far he's destroyed 2 GDROM and scratch many others.

thanks for all your help guys. if you find anything just post it if you could.
