I would really recommend that you got yourself atleast 1gb RAM. It is about the minimum acceptable amount today.
Using 4 sticks might not be good all the time as your PSU will have to deliver much more and some motherboards will lower the RAM speed if using 4 sticks. But if you buy 2x512mb and it works fine with the other ones keep it, if it does not sell the 2x256 you have. Too much ram? Well I guess you can never have too much but it is more like when it is simply a waste of money instead of a good investment. I have 2gb RAM and it feels like that is going to last for a long time. More than 2gb is probably waste of money.
