Hi, ps2 problems

Well, last year around christmas I sent my ps2 version 7 off to norcalmods to get done, and everything has been working great until recently. Whenever I stick in my backups and all that it will play them, but it starts to skip and the cd drive makes noises like it is skipping, and the game freezes, and I know this is probably bad, but when I hit the top of the system(not to hard)it goes back to working. I'm wondering if this means that my laser is going weak or whatever? I have a matrix infinity. If my laser is going weak then this sucks, cause my backup was a backup of my brothers final fantasy x game and I was enjoying that....thanks for any help.

I was wondering if maybe I should try to clean the dvd drive?

Your only allowed to make ONE backup from a original that you own. Be sure you read and understand the forum rules before you post.

It sounds like the laser is getting weak or your using crap media, maybe both.

so you're using crap...

Ritek -R = Good
Ritek +R = Bad

(In all instances in fact, +R equals bad).

Try some Ritek G04 (-Rs) and you won't be disappointed

You might simply have a dirty laser that needs to be cleaned and or adjusted, but yeah DVD-R's are better and Ritek at that.

How do I adjust a laser? I don't know if I will mess with that if it will screw anything up, but I will buy one of those cleaning things. Oh, and I had my ps2 modded through your service and I would have to say you did a great job, it got here fast and all that. Peace.

Um....If ur asking how to adjust then it probably best not to. Try the -R and cleaning disc b4 goin down that path...

Thumbs down laser problems

i had similar problem on my old ps2. the laser moves up and down the disc on a screw, there is a plastic piece that goes from the laser into the screw grooves thus when the screw turns the laser moves up and down using the grooves. i found that this plastic piece warps with the heat of continuous play and skips in the grooves making a clicking noise, causing the laser to stick and eventually stops working.
BAD DESIGN BY SONY SHOULD HAVE USED A METAL PIECE INSTEAD - OR MAYBE THIS IS WHAT THEY WANTED TO HAPPEN, SO EVERY FEW YEARS YOU HAVE TO REPLACE YOUR SYSTEM?
(BAD DESIGN OR EXELLENT MARKETING BY SONY)

Yeah, maybe that's what it is. Like sometimes it does it alot, other times I can play for a few hours and nothing happens, like last night when I played some NFL 2k5, and it did it right when I started the system, but I hit the top of the system a few times(not that hard)and suddenly it worked and it didn't do it again the whole time.

Thumbs down dont bang it!

banging the top is a bad idea! I used to do that and the disc would continue to work but after a few weeks of banging the ps2 stopped working all together.

Well that's good to know now haha. Yeah, so what am I suppose to do, cause if I just leave it going it doesn't work? I suppose I should probably just get a new ps2 and have it modded again, of course I will have to get money for that. Oh well, I guess that is life, although first I will make backups of my games on dvd-rs and then get something to clean my laser, because the other day I tried the actual madden 06 game(not a backup) and it did the same thing, so it probably isn't the games I suppose. I will still change to dvd-r because people have said that they are the ones to use, but I will get one of those cleaning kits or whatever, and if it still does the stuff after that, I suppose i will probably just need to start over and use better dvds this time.

Cool ps2 probs

I took my ps2 cover off, removed the plastic piece and heated it so i could bend it back into place. then i replaced it. this worked for the short term, but after a while the problem came back.
this is a short term fix eventually you will need a new system, but its got to be better than beating the sh*t out of your ps2.

Yeah, I mean when I sent my system to get it modded, it wasn't even brand new, like I had had it for about a couple years. I guess on top of not using the right kind of dvds, having a bit older of a system(version 7), the thing just needs to be replaced. I guess I will try to save up, get a version 12, and have that modded, and use ritek dvd-r, also I think it I will still get a dvd lens cleaning kit, just to keep around. Thanks for all the replies everyone. I suppose nothing last forever haha.

NO! Don't swap a V7 for a V12 whatever you do!

V7s are by far the best type of PS2. Simply get a new laser unit for the V7 and then get it modded. V12s are the biggest POS I've ever seen...
