Ps2 backups won't load?

Can anyone give me some ideas on why I am not able to load Ps2 backups on my friends PS4 V4 w/gap, I just installed the magic 3.1 and it is not loading any of the backups that I have burned on verbatims -R, The games work perfect on my V7 ps2 with magic 3.0. We are able to play backups of PS1 games but not the PS2, My question is, do you guys think that since we are able to load PS1 games that means the magic 3.1 chip has been installed properly and maybe the problems is his lens are too old or need cleaning, or there could still be a problem with istallation even though it plays PS1 fine.

Another quick question, The diagrams for installation show point S bridged, does anyone know if this is right, it does not seem right to me so I did not bridge the two resistors, but then again when I look close there might be a trace in the motherboard that connects both of them already, so if anyone knows let me know, Thanks in advance

The first time I installed a magic I saw the diagram and had to ask the same question. No they are not bridged. I have seen the same line between the two and also beleive taht they are connected. The points that look like they are connected are often shown as alternate points for SCex. As far as the lens goes, the fact that it boots PSX games is a very good indicator that the install was good. First try to clean the laser. If that fails to get it to boot DVD-R then look in the forum stickies for information on how to adjust the laser. The only equipment needed for this is a continuety meter. Good luck.

Strictly speaking u really need an oscilloscope to do a really good laser recalibration.

U can get some limited results by doing continuity tester method but even with the version 4 laser tuned up to the max u will still get the odd problem ( especially with magic fitted, for some reason laser seems to run slightly weaker when magic installed.)

Turning up the laser intensity pot will also reduce the life of your laser.

A less troublesome solution might be to get yr m8 to remove the chip and sell his unmodded PS2 version 4 and try and get hold of a second hand version 5 - 8 and fit mod chip in there. Will save a lot of messing around and dissapointment.

Thanks for your help guys, We'll try the cleaning first and burning to different Media to see if we see any change. If that does not work then we might try to sell it and get a version higher than 5, Thanks again for your help.

Question for Ottoman. When you test a laser with an oscilloscope do you use an O/E converter or can you somehow test with a standard probe?

u dont test the laser, u look at the reflected eye pattern signal.

I use a standard X10 1MOhm probe with ground going to edge of motherboard.

try looking HERE!! .

This only covers laser intensity pot and not height/azimuth but once you've got the scope on there u can adjust all until u get perfect eye signal pattern.

hey guys, letting you know what the problem was from my original post, it was my fault, hehe, turns out that the G point came loose, I opened up the PS2 again and it was right there in front of me, I guess I did not leave the iron long enough, too scared to bridge the legs of the chip together, hehe. Anyways looks like that fix the problem. everything works now, thanks for your help anyways.

p.s. His PS2 even plays my backups of Games in DVD+R format with no reading or loading problems at all, very interesting, I thought V4 were not able to do this and his PS2 is more than a year old, I guess it depends on what condition the laser is in.

Glad you worked everything out. Some v4s will play +r but you don't come across this very often.

Yeah, every laser is adjusted slightly differently. With dvd-r if your laser dodgy it tends to read sum but not others whereas dvd=r tends to have a threshold. It either won't look at it or reads it perfectly.

Most version 4's I've chipped won't even recognise dvd-r to start with without a quick tweak of the laser.

I noticed on the link that it dosent specify any information on a test point for US(ntsc) systems. Any information would be appreciated.
