PS1 CD Backups

Hi,

I have this old PS1 Vagrant story CD that I purchased 2nd hand several years ago.
Recently I felt like playing this game again but since it's old and covered with scratches I was afraid to put it in my PS2 (V9 with MI) in fear I would again ruin my laser.
So I decided to make a backup but the thing is that I have no idea which CD media to use and I was hoping for some advice. I have some Verbatim datalifeplus CDs, are they safe?
Thanks.

I've had my Playstation since around 98 and been playing backups since around...2000. I've been using all different brands, from Verbatim DataLife and Sony to the real poor quality CDRs like Princo and SAST. My copy of Driver 1 is severely scratched, and I can hear the pressure the disc puts on the laser, but my PSX is working fine, so I doubt you should have any problems, unless you using those real shoddy shoddy discs that seem to come in packs of 100....

Ps1 vs PS2

First of all lets take into account the cost of hardware.
Ps1 maybe 15.99 - 29.99 in the used or unsold bin of a local game store.
PS2 still around 149.99 - last I saw.

Now, Ps1 or PSX, (PSX depends on model), have been around longer, sony fixed many of their problems and if the laser breaks down, replacement parts could be found in your neighbor's yard sale cannibalized from another console.

PS2 laser replacement parts can cost up to 60.00
Plus sending it in somewhere for repairs can cost labor to the point when it's cheaper to buy a new one.

So, either buy some quality media, Verbatim is good - I like Memorex, or pick up a Ps1 and don't test your PS2's longevity. Unless you like seeing that red screen.
