Bad Power Button

My buddy atarted having problems with his xbox. It will turn off on him in random intervals and then all of a sudden the power button does not work. BUT he can turn it on via the eject button and it works fine.....Another BUT......He has a chip that you need to hold the power button down to activate the chip and he can hold the eject and power button down at the same time and it boots up the chip......I thought it may be the PS, but it seems a little fishy.......Any ideas?
