How to Update Firmware

HI all, I have a samsung DVDRom and a sony DVD+/-RW drive. They both has new firmwares available but I have no idea how to update them. The two drives are currently on Cable Select instead of Master and Slave. My questions are:
Do I have to set one to master and one to slave?
If I do set them to master/slave, will the master (Samsung TS-352A) and the slave (sony DRU-710A) be able to update or only the master drive will be able to.
Thanks for any response. I performed a few seraches on this forum but couldn't find any. Sorry if a similar topic was already posted.
Any other important things to keep in mind before updating will also be helpful for this newbie (last year, tried to update the firmware on a LiteOn dvd drive when it was on cable select and the drive became useless).

I have never used cable select, cos I don't like it. If you want to jumper the drives, set the writer as master and the rom as slave.

Updating firmware isn't a big thing. Most manufacturers offering a flash with the firmware or an executable exe. Download your firmware and read the included instructions, that's all.

thanks for the headsup. What is the advantage of Master/Slave over Cable Select and is the Writer drive always set to master or can it be on slave?

there is no advantage or something.

if you configure both drives as 'cable select' then master/slave will be controlled by the connection of the drives with the ide cable.
the drive connected at the end of the cable will be master and the drive connected to the middle will be slave.

if for some reason you want the drive connected to the end of the ide cable to be slave then you have to configure it by using the jumpers.

<edit> stole this text from another forum:
Quote:
Using the Cable Select method, you jumper both drives to "Cable Select". In the Cable Select method the devices are heirarchically identified electrically to the IDE controller by their relative position on the cable; the "first", or primary (HDD-0), device is the device connected at the opposite end of the cable from the motherboard, the "second", secondary (HDD-1), device is the device connected to the middle connector on the cable. In a Cable Select installation both drives are jumpered as "Cable Select", and jumpers do not have to be reset to change heirarchy of devices; i.e., each device is identified by it's position on the cable, "Master" at the end, "Slave" at the middle.
