Check the Installers Sticky for reliable installers, thats in the PS2 section. Yes its the chips fault so even if you put in a new laser the NEO will burn it out a lot sooner than if you used a newer chip. But if your gonna get a new ps2 why not just hold off.

Just check that the laser doesnt just need a clean , i was told that mine needed a new laser and when i took the hoover to it and cleaned out the dust it worked fine ,lol
