Can I delete daemon tools after I mount an image?

The Sims 2 is the game and I mounted the mini backup image using Daemon tools. Will the game still work without a CD if I uninstall Daemon tools?

Also is there a way to hide the mounted drive image that appears inside of the MY COMPUTER icon when opened? I using Windows XP.

demon tools creates a virtual drive, that means something EXTRA in my computer's list of CD drives..
Deleting that drive would make the drive no longer there.. and this no point in having a mini-image there.
hiding the drive from the "my computer" view is done with TweakUI (google it)

What is the problem exactly?

I just don't like having daemon tools (icon) running in the background everytime my system starts up and I don't want that extra drive showing up reading Sims2_1(F) drive listed in MY COMPUTER. I would like a way to hide both of these things permanatly and still have the Sims 2 on this system without having to bother with the original disc ofcoase.
You see I have the US version of the game so from my understanding I need the minibackup image mounted in order to make this game work 100% without the DVD disc (which it seems to do at first glance), and there is not a NoCD fix EXE ONLY that will work 100% with this version of the game, only Moneys NOCD fix will work 100% with the international version not the US one.(right?). The disc would get handled an extrme bunch if I were to use that and with all the tots at my daycare having that icon and drive showing up it's going to tempt someone to open it and mess things up.

Hard to understand. When you need a virtual disk, you LAUNCH Daemon and you tell him to mount the disk. When you don't need any virtual disk, you tell Daemon to unmount the disk, and you QUIT Daemon. No more virtual disk, no more Daemon. Like any application : launch it, use it, quit it. Where is the problem?

PLEASE READ THE DOX !!!

Bonjour chez vous,
Ma Pomme

PS: I think this thread must be moved, closed, and followed... on the Daemon Tools site !

1. Use TWEAKUI to hide the drive from My Computer.
2. right-click on the demon-tools taskbar icon to disable the icon.

O.k., thanks for your help. Thats what I was wondering about. I really didn't need Deamon-tools for anything else so I inturn don't want it showing. Some told me on another thread that the Sims NoCD fix #2 works 100% for the US version of the game, I might try that first and if it fails I'll keep the Deamon thing.

the way i have it set up, daemon does launch automatically at startup (which is default i think). i usually just have it set to 1 virtual drive, but sometimes use 2 or 3. the fact that these extra drives appear in my computer seems more convenient than problematic

you can easily change these settings to have daemon running only when you run it (ie NOT at startup) and you can disable all virtual drives while still having the program running to get rid of the disk icons in my computer

however there isnt a way to hide the icon in my computer while still using a mounted image as a CD if thats what you're asking (why would you want to do this anyway? if you want it to act as a CD drive, then an icon in my computer is part and parcel of that.)

TweakUi works great for hiding the drive.
Do you know if Daemon Tools uses any system resourses. I wish there was a way to permantly mount the mini-backup image so D-tools wouldn't have to be running in the background of WinXP. I hate having extra stuff running.

Does the image work with Alcohol? Alcohol loads as a driver without a system tray icon.

Hey whoeverxxx,

Why wouldn't Daemon Tools using some system resources? But, on the other hand, why wouldn't _any_ other software, that mounts a floppy/hard disk/CD/DVD image, use some system resources?

After all, when you access your hard disks, you access them via software, which is an integral part of the operating system. When you access the mounted CD/DVD's, you access them again via software, which is a third-party program but still bonded quite closely to the OS as it does low-level stuff.

But what's the difference between the two? It's that one is by M$ and the other is by someone else. And, I guess, you're better off with using third-party softwares than some M$ junk built into the OS!

Joe

some people think taskbar icons are an indication of running software..
as opposed to the process list in the task manager..
