+r disks

i have a ps2 chipped (v6) with a duo chip boots every thing that is on dvd-r and all films on dvd-/+r the problem is that the playstation will not boot ps2 games on +r disks the playstation logo comes up and then it goes to the red screen i have heard that ps2 will load these is this a chip related problem or something else?

Its more ps2 related. Usually the newer v9 and up ps2's claim to boot them. Older ones are hit and miss.

I was under the impression that version 5 and newer would boot dvd+r but it is down to yr laser at the end of the day. The advice given here is for ps2 games ( and any dvd movie backup you intend to play on yr ps2) should be burned onto a ritek dye based dvd-r and nothing else....if you want your ps2 laser to work for more than a few months. doesn't matter whos ps2 will run what media. stick to dvd-r and ritek.

thanks for the advice i allways use ritek -r disks and never had a problem at all just someone asked me can you use +r for games as he tried it and they didnt work but his dvd backups work fine

Well, at least that is what everybody says. But does -r media really have better reflectivity than +r media of the same brand? I doubt it. Or does the technical difference in the burning process of the two DVD-types make any difference to laser life? Any specialists around?

Probably not but people have had more sucess with -r than +r hence why they're recommended. C'mon, it aint brain surgery

DVD -r has better compatibility with the older PS2's since it came out before the newer DVD +r technology. But at the end of the day it does come down to the laser and tolerence levels. Stick with DVD -r and don't worry about it.

Why question tried and true results? Is there a shortage in DVD -r that I'm not aware about?

Yeah, I know you´re right, it´s more a theoretical question. But my impression of this forum is that there are lots of people discussing about very very special topics, and that some of them really have a huge knowledge of everything concerning PS2s and are interested in sharing it and inform others about even the smallest detail. I really appreciate this and found lots of help in the forum, with lots of technical background. That is why I am a bit astonished that the +r/-r question is usually answered by "stick to -r", "stick to riteks" etc. without any insider information about testing, troubles, technical details etc. And there are still people out there with burners who just burn +r, it is important for them to know if they really have to buy a new burner to save their ps2-lasers. Or maybe people used to backup their older games on +r and want to know if they can use them safely. C´mon, anyone should have experiences and knowledge about this. As far as I am concerned, my old V3 read +R perfectly (so compatibility didn´t matter), but now she shows laser weakness after a few hundred hours of gaming. Maybe this was caused by the (good brand) +Rs, maybe it would have happened with -Rs as well, who knows?

Exactly, lufcfan, that is the thread I found when I tried to find info about +R (it´s linked in the UISticky, isn´t it?), and it says:

Success with DVD/DVD-R on the PS2 is, first and foremost, a question of reflectivity and the causes of poor reflectivity.

So I thought there is maybe no difference between the two standards (as long as they have the same reflectivity) for lasers that are able to read +Rs. Charlie also says the following:

DVD+R is the write-once version, also with a polymer dye so that the burned result is narly identical with DVD-R. The "nearly" term reflects the fact that newer read laser mechanisms are more accurate and can resolve the small differences between DVD-R and DVD+R arising from the fact that DVD+R can be burned at 2.4x because of the wobbled groove.

Maybe resolving these small differences stresses the laser more than just reading a -R?
