new media check requiring latest bios?
i was just wondering if there is a new version of the media check - i.e. requiring me to have a bios above X2 4977 -
i ask because some i am unable to back up bloodrayne 2 or kingdom under fire i never had a problem before - i am using the old matrix 256 chip and a version 1.0 xbox and i have made about 20 fully working back ups of games like burnout 3 and ninja gaiden - but it seems that recently the newer games do not work -i.e. i get to the xbox start screen and it says xecuter 2 but then the disk does not load - any tips are helpful - i think it might be a problem with my burner but i would like to know before i shell out the money for a new one thanx |

No new media checks that I know of. Ive backed up bloodrayne 2 as well and it booted right up. As a matter of fact it seems as if game lately have not been using the old media checks. Its like theres no protection like the old days.
Tyler.

wait wait wait, hold up. x2_4977? There is no new media check, but there is an older one that is almost 2 years old. 4977 might have been the first xecuter bios to bypass it. If you cannot run backups of new games, you might need to upgrade.
I would upgrade to 4981 (not 82 or 83). It is customizable like all older bios, but has a new feature that stops you from logging onto xbox live on accident. It might not be full proof, but i haven't heard a complaint from some who forgot to turn their chip off yet,

thanx for the info,
that would require me to upgrade my chip to the newer versions ? (i.e. i have the 256k matrix chip - so i would have to get a 512k or a 1mb chip -i checked around and the 4981 version is for the 512k chips -) i ask b/c i had no problem with Burnout 3 and that came about the same time (1 month or so ) it is not that i don't want to upgrade my chip - but i really don't - i am not inclined to put things back together properly once they have been taken apart - even if they are soder-less (i.e. the paper weight that looks like a PS2) again thanx for the info |

You dont need another chip. I had the latest version of bios on my old matrix. You may have to shrink your bios though. But there are tools to do such things.

Yah, just look for a program called "xbtool". You can resize bios images, change boot colors, turn off the animation, change boot programs..etc. If you don't want to upgrade, you can also just patch the games manually. They all share the same line of code that stops it from running off of other media.
