Newbie question

OK, I just got my xbox chipped, and have managed to run evox on it from a dvdrw, and got mame and a few roms on there, which i can get going. Although the menu in mame doesn't seem to work quite right, but that's not my question.

I'd like to have evox dashboard when I boot up my xbox with the chip on, but I want to be able to play xbox live. The instructions/tutorial for evox talks about copying it onto the HD, but I don't want to get rid of the old dash so I can get on xbl. Or will replacing it not make any difference to games?

I could keep loading it off disk, but my xbox doesn't seem to like it too much, and only loads it one in 5 goes...

So, in a nutshell, can I have evox dashboard on my xbox and still play xbox live?

What bios do you have and what chip do you have?

First off just get all the files off your Evox dvd and transfer them to your xbox C:Folder. I would make a backup of my C: Folder before I do this, just in case.

Youll have to rename the default.xbe in on the Evox files befor you transfer them to your xbox. Rename it to evox.xbe. Also that depends on what bios your using too. Se we need more info.

OK, sorry if I haven't provided enough info. I have an aladdin advance chip, but i'm afraid that's all I know. Someone else did the installation for me.

I know how to get evox onto my hard drive, so I can start up with the chip and then launch emulators. I just want to also be able to start up normally and go on xbl too, and I'm wondering if I can do that with evox on my HD. Sorry if this is in the stickies but as far as I can tell it isn't.

edit:
Thanks very much anyway for the replies so far!

Yes you can play games online with, and withoout EvoX this makes no difference. But I dont think you can play the games on the hdd online. You can play them over a LAN tho (i think)

And the hdd has to be locked?

I'm perfectly happy to use original games to play online, was just worried that if I replaced the normal dash with evox then it would either refuse to get to the dash without the chip active, or possibly start up with evox with or without the chip. And that games would notice the different dash somehow, and so I'd be banned from xbl.

Thanks again for the help, it's much appreciated

also if you forget to turn off the chip and you get banned. You can un-ban yourself.

I'm using x2.4983.06 bios and it has a boot order for dashes that are on the C folder. My default xbox dashboard is called "xboxdash.xbe" and my evox dash is called "evoxdash.xbe." With the mod chip turned on, the bios boots the exovdash.xbe first, because of the boot order which allows me to get into evox. With the mod chip turned off, the original bios boots xboxbash.xbe allowing me to connect to XBL.

So, depending on your bios and modchip, your original xbox dash does not have to get deleted or renamed, just name your custom dash to something that the bios will load according to the boot sequence.

Also, your custom harddrive will have to be locked in order to boot with the modchip off.

That sounds like the kinda thing I'm after. I don't have a custom HD, so I've nothing to worry about there. You say your evox is called evoxdash.xbe and loads up because of the boot sequence in your bios: Is this defined by you? If so how? or is it just the bios standard?
I guess I should try doing the same for me and seeing...

Thanks for your help there!

And about the mod-chip staying on, I'm assuming provided my LED is green, I'm safe to go on xbl? And orange means don't do it?

Edit:
Renamed xboxdash to evoxdash and msxboxdash to xboxdash and I now get either the original or evox depending on chip on/off. Thanks a bunch!
