Mafia - 3CD to DVD backup?

been trying to back up some of my games recently, backing them up onto DVD if they justify it by being on a lot of cds. this way it saves disk swapping while installing and saves space, also gives the capacity to include any updates or addons that have been released for the game since the retail.

however i'm stuck with Mafia - i dump the files from the 3 disks into one directory on my hard drive, and it wont install, either from there or if it was burned to dvd (tested using iso creating software to save disks)

it begins the install and immediately asks for disk 1. i've tried naming the dvd to the name of disk 1 (MAFIA_CD_1) and it installs fine until it needs disk 2... and then asks for it.

so surely the info. is kept somewhere telling it to look for the name of the disk? does anyone have any idea how i can change this to make it look in the same folder?

yes i tried using an MSI editor (not orca, but it does the same job)
but the trouble is, mafia does not have a .msi file, just a setup.exe, which can not be edited using this program

the file is called MafiaSetup.exe
im using Hex Workshop 4.2, there is no separate entries for the three disks, just one entry that says 'MAFIA_CD_%i' so i guess the %i stands for whichever number of the disk that is being asked for at the time.
i changed this to MAFIA, replacing the last 6 characters (_CD_%i) with spaces.

but now the file does nothing at all when it is run

Well i think this volume label check is on an different way its not so easy as with doom3,because i think this: _%i is an push vallue (or something like that) the volume checks the label and put then the cd number in that push or dword vallue so i think that it has to be changed somewhere else in that exe file but maybe its also possible by moddifying another file is there an setup.ins file ?

no, there is no setup.inf file

i've tried replacing the letters with spaces, and also with full stops as the file seems to use them instead of spaces.

the file still works fine - but also still asks for the cd. so this does not seem to have affected it at all.

the problem must lie elsewhere
