Well, I bought it from a gamestop. I have a radeon 9700 gfx card. Be warned, I have to play at 640x40 resolution with video quality set to normal to get descent framerates. And on normal, all textures look like filtured Doom 1 textures (at normal quality), that's right. Take jedi academy (q3 engine), set texture quality to low, add bump mapping, great dynamic lighting, and you get what doom 3 looks like on anything under a 9800Ultra gfx card.

Gameplay is pretty cool though, surprisingly.

Oh, and unfortunately, the game seems to crash every 15 minutes for most people I have talked to that has it. I probably won't be playing it until the first patch is released. My advice, save it for xbox if you own one. Loading times will be reduced, and it will be optomised for the xbox hardware, meaning, no crash issues and better than low quality.

I've been reading the exact opposite... The fanboys believed the hype over this one. Like I have been saying for over a year now on here. This game was nothing more then an engine demo from ID Software. You people fell for it.

Roll on Half-Life 2

I found out the reason for this and the solution to fix this problem.

As you already know after installation the game consits only of the doom3.exe and some .PK4 files. Those PK4 files includes the entire game (sounds, videos, textures etc.) in high compressed form.

Normally those files were decompresse during the game.

But this exactly is the problem. Even new CPUs are not able to decompress those files while running the game with good peformance and therfore the game runs very **** also on new computers. I don't know if the develpers of ID-Soft was just too stupid to think about this or if they have an agreement with some hardware manufacturing firms.

How to get around this problem:

It is very simple. Go to your Doom 3 installation directoy and get inside the folder "Base". There are some .PK4 files you have to open each of them with WinRAR 3.3 and extract their entire contents to the Base dir in you Doom 3 installation folder (replace all files if they are any duplicates). Now you have to delete all .PK4 files in the Base folder to prevent the game to use those compressed files agian.

Now the game starts and runs mutch faster!!!

Have fun playing Doom 3!!!

Maybe this helps?

Exclamation Doom 3 is GREAT!!

My Doom 3 install and running have been flawless. I'm running a P4 2.4 with a nVidia FX5700 256meg ASUS video card (61.76 driver),with 1 gig ddr ram on a MSI 845PEMAX motherboard. Doom 3 detected the settings and I'm running it on High with the resolution being 800x600. This game is running flawless. I found this tech tip on a Doom 3 forum. Run the game at the same screen resolution as your desktop. eg. desktop (800x600)=Doom3 (800x600)
If you like first person shooters then this is the next level in graphics and sound. Yes it is the same old thing....but it is a FPS with the best quality graphics etc.

i've had no crashes at all.

playing it on a P4 3.2 ghz with 1gb pc3200 ddr ram, and a Geforce 4 Ti4800 SE graphics card

the graphics card is a decent one, but its letting me down here as it came just before directx 9, so its an 8.1 card. this means that if i let Doom 3 auto detect the settings it puts it at 640x480 with all the frills turned off.

but i put it up to 1024x768 for now, with AA on, everything else on and to the max, and it runs excellently.

might still go looking for a new card though

and i did think it was all hype but had to try it anyway. the graphics *look* amazing, but its not a great game engine. theres little or no interactivity with the environment. bullets do not leave holes or make marks. you cant shoot glass. i for one would be happy if a game engine looked a little worse but acted a little better.
as for the gameplay... well the old Dooms were fun and addictive even though they consisted of shooting everything that moved. thats not enough for games these days, but sadly some games come out that are still like this (i was playing painkiller this morning, and thats the last time i'll ever play it)
so far i've found Doom 3 a bit linear but im still in the 'setting up the story' beginning part. i hope it will open out a bit later. however you cant beat the atmosphere. i love the little things like you will see some ammo in a corner and go to pick it up, without realising its not a corner but a corridor obscured by shadow, where a creature is waiting to hit you with a wrench!
and things drop down from ceilings, burst out from under stairs, all sorts of things. made me scream out loud a couple of times, so i've got to say its worth playing
