How can I make a back-up?

My 15 month old boy grabbed a handful of discs from the cupboard and this has resulted in them not being read by my DC. If I made a back up would this get me working again as it should theorectically copy the digital data despite the state of the original disc. If the answer is yes - then how can I do this. I know I can't make a straight disc-to-disc copy as the format is different. Any help appreciated.
