Hi,

I have known Charlie for years and first met him on this board when i waas looking into buying a chipped PS2.

Even back then he know his sh*t about chips booting methods etc etc. I wish him all the best in the future.

There is no way the modchip scene will die down, you can pick up a modchip on the net so easy these days.

This happened to the NEO brand of modchips a few years ago, SONY got involved and now they are no more.

As for the laws in the UK (and other co British ruled land) on chips is kinda weird. Sony was not really saying making the back ups were illegal, it was how it was being played that was illegal. They were going on the basis that the chip bypassed their code and they felt afraid by that.

Just like this 12 year old girl, Charlie is just a example I’m sure there will be more as time gos on too.
But if you stole a cd from a store would the IRAA get involved? i somehow doubt they would with something so trivial. If you stole a shipment of cds going to a store would they get involved? I doubt it once again. How come stealing a cd of the internet really be any different?

It's like stealing a car from off the street or stealing a car from a car yard. At the end of the day it's still car theft.

Nah, the IRAA wouldn't get involved if you stole the tangible CDs. It’s the job of the local law and the person you stole it from to prosecute you.

But when it comes to downloading music thats a whole different ball game. It’s a computer file and it falls under different rules, and than the IRAA has the legal right to go after you.

****ing Bollocks

The law is all a load of crap....especially in the uk

Tell me this, If charlie_ps2 gets put in prison for that, then shouldn't all dixons/curry's/walmart staff be there as well???

After all they're the ones selling us vcr's and dvd recorders to take films off TV......which is also illegal without full written permission from the copywrite owner. (Most people arn't even aware of this!)

Poor bloke

Still not too worried. I just dont think that fool stood up for himself. We are by law allowed to make one backup of our original games. Nowhere in that order was there anything refrencing that.

i remember reading an artical saying that sony declared the ps2 as a computer so they could avoid imoprt taxes on the ps2s they sent to europe, so if im right (which i like t tink i am) then wouldn't that make modding a ps2 the same as adding a new pice of hardware to your pc

technically, yes is would be almost the same as adding hardware but Sony is pressing more toward stopping modchip sales across the globe. I guess they only considered it a computer for evading tax issues but their motives now are just based on stopping from losing money in regard to piracy.
