This is undoubtedly a dumb question, but please bear with me.
I have purchased a Pioneer A07/107 writer which is supposed to burn 8X DVD media. It works well with Ritek and PioData 4X DVDs. Now that 8X DVDs are dropping in price I am interested in using the 8X feature of the Pioneer. Dumb question: What determines the speed with which the Pioneer writes to the DVD media? Does the Pioneer sense the presence of the 8X disk? Does the burn software detect the presenceof the 8X disk? Do I have to modify the software to get the 8X speed? I am using the AnyDVD/CloneDVD2 combination at 4X with great success. Thanks for your help. LGS Last edited by lugesm; 21-07-2004 at 06:01. |

Basically your drive is set to run a test and find out if your using 4x or whatever type of media your using. Then it only allows for up to that speed.
I personally am using a hacked firmware that disables that test and lets me burn anything at 8x speed. Only thing is, the media actually has to be able to handle it. I know that Ritek 4x discs can handle 8x burning so I save loads of $$ by just using them. If I want to use the old Ritek 2x media, I have to manually set the speed back down to 2x, because the test is disabled. Otherwise it will try to burn the 2x discs at 8x as well and that hardly ever works.Tyler!

Sorry I am so thickheaded here, Tyler.
OK, so the drive detects the max speed of the inserted media. Does the burn program (In this case CloneDVD2) burn at the 8X speed automatically, or do I have to do something in CloneDVD2 to make this happen? Thanks for your patience. LGS |

If Clonedvd2 is set to MAX it will burn to the max capabilities of the burner and the media combination.
The firmware hack disables half of that problem by allowing the burner to burn all dvd-r discs at 8x speed. Now with that being said, if your media isnt truely able to burn at 8x you will get a burn error. For example GO3 Riteks have a problem burning that fast. GO4's burn at 8x without problem. If you use other media, you do so at your own risk. All in all, if you have the firmware hack all you have to do is make sure that if you wish to use GO3 Riteks you may want to manually make sure CloneDVD2 is set to burn at 2-2.4x. I have mine set to Max at all times because I am using GO4 Riteks. Tyler!
