HELP! ps1 backups dont work on my ps2!!!

hi all,

i just cant solve this problem! please help!
i have a pal ps2 with the dms3 mod chip, so EVERY country code should work. i tried clonecd and nero for the backup tests:
im having problems with following backup games: tales of destiny, lunar, star ocean (all of them get the ps1 logo on screen, but then freeze) and valkyrie profile (game boots, but hangs up everytime i try to get out of an dungeon, disc rotates very fast, but the black screen doesnt disappear).
i boot the games by resetting and holding the o button.
im a newbie, so it would be cool, if i could get some information regarding this problem.

btw: i use nero startsmart, is this a BAD idea? what programm should i use?!

Very interesting. What media are you using? Also, you may want to make a new image and try Alcohol 120% for that. Also, read the image as slow as you can and burn at a slower speed if you're having difficulties at faster speeds and vice-versa.

Try and get hold of some Verbatim DataLifePLUS CD-R media as this is by far the best stuff...

im already tried sony, philips and memorex cdr media. three different media for valkyrie profile. all of it have the same problem. should i use other hardware (cd burner). i think i have quite an old burner.

Try cleaning the laser on your burner. That might work...

well i have other backups which work fine. so i dont think its the lens. do you have an idea why the startup works (ps1 logo), but then the screen freezes? is this more of a cd reading problem (when making the image data), or a problem of the cd burning process?

Neither. The problem is your PS2 is having trouble reading your weak burns. Your PC is reading and burning fine but your weak burns are meant for PC data on PC drives designed to read weak CDR Data. PS2’s are not optimized for, or intended for recordable media. Try verbatim PREMIUM dark blue media, and try burning an audio CD and see if your PS2 will play all the tracks good. Some cheap burners are just not good enough for Consoles, they are made just for PC data.

I bet if you burn a full audio CD wit the speed and media you are having trouble with, you will find the first tracks might play OK but by the end of the CD your PS2 will have problem playing audio. Same as your games, the PS2 is reading the inner center data but when it tries to load a file toward the outside edge it hangs, unable to load. Also try your media on other Stations. PS2 may also need adjusting.

thank you for the detailed info. ill try another burnhardware and if that doesnt work, ill get the media you mentioned.
btw: does it make sense to put the burning speed down? is there any difference in the results, even with the better burners?? what speed should i choose for good quality, that can be read by my ps2?

Depends on the disc. Faster speed rated discs tend to work much better when burned at the higher speeds, which cannot be achieved in older burners, and therefore maybe causing the weak burns and your problems. The mid-slower rated discs perform better at a much slower speed. Hope this helps...

hmm i cant find the verbatim PREMIUM dark blue media. i even looked at the verbatim.de homepage. there are two different premium disks at 30 and 210 mb size. but no 700mb discs! maybe this disks are only available in the us??? could somebody give me a link? amazon.de doesnt have them too...

What brand of burner do you have?? Is it RAW DAO96 compatable??

The burner IS RAW-DAO96 so thats not the problem. Here in the US, Sony, philips and memorex cd-r's are crap. I would suggest burning with Clonecd at 1x or 2x on better media. Be sure "read errors" are set to abort. If it makes it to the PSX logo screen then freezes its not the chip, its most likely a media issue.
