Why is there still a need for game fix cr@cks when we have Alcohol 120%?

This must surely be a REALLY basic question but if we have Alcohol 120%, which will supposedly copy "any" game, why do we still need fixed .exes and no-CDs?

What am I missing?

A nocd crack is much smaller to have on your hd then a 700Mb image file for every game you want to play.
On top of that not everyone uses alcohol 120% or daemon tools, so cracks are still highly appreciated.

Try the Alcohol forums: _http://forum.alcohol-soft.com
I'm currently trying to work out why my Pioneer DVR-106D won't burn Safedisk in RAW DAO mode

Hi Sara2, I think that:

1. Not all copy protections can be emulated with even Alcohol 120%.

2. Some copy protections blacklist Alcohol 120% - and lots of other CD/DVD emulators, as well - so, even if the image was a perfect copy, the protection would refuse to run with the emulator activated.

the same could be said for clone cd,, its still one of the best copying programs available.

its just not set up to be as easily used as alchohol.

and just because you make a backup dont mean the copy protection got copied 100% and in most cases the copy protection isnt copied, its only false copied. that why it asks for a cd.

also most people dont burn images properly like safedisk and secure rom, so your still stuck with a non working backup.

my only thought is why hasnt someone devised a copying software that copies the cd bit by bit by bit,, every single 10110011010111010 and so one.
that in theory should produce a true copy since it aligns each 1 and 0 to a sector on the cd.
but also certain cd's contain signatures that simply cant be copied or not copied that easily.

one would assume that by reading ever 1 and 1 and associating those 1's and 0's with a sector on the cd that a true copy would be produced,, but alas im not a programmer and i only speculate.

In theory that works, and did work for old protections (by reading in RAW mode).
Anyway, protection technology advanced and various techniques were developed such as in Safedisk 2 which caused many writers some problems - I'm not technically savvy in the working of this however.
Later protections used at the minute now use actual physical characteristics of the cd. With Securom 4.8x the spiral data track is different in a way that it takes the drive varying amounts of time to read certain sectors; this time varies over the disk and as a result, a graph showing this access time looks very irregular compared to a normal cd which has a smooth curve. (The Plextor Premium can get very close to replicating a Securom 4.8x disk perfectly)
So more often that not, copying the protections 1:1 is almost impossible and usually requires some sort or emulation or alteration.

Besides some people prefer to drink 120% Alcohol instead of using it to burn!

Much easier to be done with it, crack the exe and simply click on a shortcut and your game is running. No cd's, no fumbling around with mounting various cd's images.

NO CD cracks are great and still much needed!

Matter of fact, I look for the cracks now BEFORE I even consider buying a game. Do not buy a game till I know I do not have to use the cd each time I (well mostly my kids) want to play the game.

It is not a money issue, I own many (too many) games on cd. It is the simplicity of it!
