Okay, sold the broken box for $65 dollars (the buyer knew it was broken). Bought a new XBOX (Line 06, 07/25/2003, Samsung Drive, Conexant Chip... blah blah blah). Set my X2.3blite+ in place. Got a good boot with the stock Seagate 10GB drive.

Tried putting in my Maxtor 120GB (that was originally in the box that died): got a "06" HDD Error.

Tried Putting in a Western Digital 80GB drive: got a "06" HDD Error.

Suggestions? What am I doing wrong?

ALSO: anyone have suggestions for fan replacements or other cooling options? I saw some tutorials regarding "thermal compound replacement with Arctic Silver" but that seems a bit more extensive than I want to invest time and effort to.

There are 80mm Vantec fans at a store near me for $4.99.

I can never say this enough...axmichigan, sean, llamma, anyone else who cruises these boards and helps people out, "Thank you".

HAHAHA! Darn, okay.

Are HDDUnlock and HDDLockDisable keys unique to HDDs or to XBOXs? Or Both? I can borrow back the broken XBOX, not a problem. Getting it to work, on the other hand is a problem...

Hey axmichigan,

I tried everything that you had mentioned. I returned the XBOX to its stock state (no mod, original hard drive, etc) and it would still 3xboot then frag. I must have tried every configuration under the sun (physically, hardware wise) but she must've been in really bad shape. I kinda feel bad for the buyer that took it off my hands, but I made sure to tell him that it was really messed up.

Oh well, I guess I have a 120GB paper weight until the hacks figure a way to bypass ATA security measures.

I've really been thinking about this. There's the two heat sinks (CPU and GPU), and then there was my Maxtor 120GB that probably runs fairly warm even when idling, compounded by the length of play time (approx 3 hours) with a heavily disk-accessing game (KoTOR). I'm pretty sure something got fried.

Anyone here seen or used that "Auto Air Cooler" fan attachment? Is it loud? Instrusively load?

Any other suggestions for fan or cooling mods?

they have cooling mods
and if i can recall u have an x2 lite..
but do u have ur original xbox taht had the hdd in it?
try soem of these tutorials for cooling ur box:
http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/fan.php
http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/potentiometer.php
http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/hddfan.php
http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/water-cooled.php
i also recommend modifying the bios in ur xbox with xbtool to use more fan % i dunno if the heat sink fans can wear out.. anyone else?

Hmmm. What about power? Considering the hard drive is was only meant to be accessed sporadically for gamesaves and what not, do you think that the addition/use of a hard drive for constant use and access would put a strain on the power supply? I know that it's only, what, 12 volts, but I wonder if that doesn't cause additional stress.

Thanks, axmichigan, I read through most of that material. As it is, I think I want to stay away from any more physical alteration and wiring. I may go with this "auto air cooler" attachment and bear with the noise. I tend to play with the audio pretty loud anyway.

When something goes wrong, I always wonder "Damn, did this thing cr@p out on me because of something I did so-and-so long ago with the doohickey and whatchamacallit?"

Okay, here is the totality of my situation...

My first Xbox died. And with that, the Maxtor Diamond 120GB HDD that was installed in it has been unrecoverable (I don't KNOW the password).

I do have the eeprom.bin made from the "backup" option of evox from that [dead] motherboard/xbox. (The "backup" was made off the stock drive when I first mod'd so the "hdddisablepassword" in it won't work for the 120GB, but for all my research, it appears the eeprom is a constant.)

Of course, there are no hash calculators that I know of for xbox versions over 1.1, but there are eeprom flashers (actually, Slayers will flash an eeprom from a .bin, I believe). So, if I flash my new Xbox's eeprom with the old boards eeprom.bin, I should be able to use my old 120GB HDD, right...?

Haha, I've learned more than I ever wanted to really know in the last week...
