New DCs don't play copied games

Just bought one of the $99 specials at Wal-Mart, and it doesn't play any of the boot disks or backup games. I know this is the case because I've played these same files on other DC units.

Anyone also have this problem? If so, please e-mail/respond.

So, there are mod chips for new version DC's, but not older versions? Where are they and do you still have to use iso's? Thanks!!!

uh, no. Sega stopped making dreamcasts and the most recent units still played the copied games. maybee something is wrong with yours? and the reason we use isos isn't because of the system, its because cd-rom drives arent capable of reading them

I just got the New $99 special DC also...The boot disc don't work and DOA 2 don't work on mine either, but it worked on my friend. The boot and DOA2 is on the green tinted CDs. Bangai-O do work but the CDs are black like the PSX. Maybe that is the soltution...burn on black CDs.

Will let you know if my theory is correct, just got DC like 4 days ago. I even exchange the machine for another one and still the same problem. Going to test out the Black CDs theory now.

Hi, my name is Tom.
Well, I know that for some Newer DC, sega has made it only reads GD-ROM disc. Which means when the DC detected that what you insert is not a GD-ROM.. it won't start the game. And I've also know that you can really tell the difference between the Newer DC and Older DC... sega didn't even change the model #......
However, i might been wrong... so...

And, Boot Disc doesn't support Moded DC... just like mines... My DC is US version and has been moded when i purchase it...
However, if you make the GAME self-bootable.. then you can play..
i just figure this out like a month b4... me happy...

And of course... if what i say is true.. .. if u got the Nerer DC which will detect for GD-ROM before game start...... then i dunno how to solve it...

I hope this hleps..
and... like i say..
i can't guarantee that sega really did that cuz i don't have actual proof too...
so.....
latz lah..

Solution

okay, heres the deal:

many new dcs have a bios change that prevents it from reading cdrs that contain audio (audio boot data in this case) before the game data. this presents a small problem. especially considering that all the older echelon self-boots do this.

the solution is to use Xeal's Bin2Boot, which places the data before audio. some of the new rips use this anyway, but what about all those old games you have laying around?

well, heres what you do:
1) rip a cdi image from your "backup" with discj
2)use CDIRip to get a bin/cue from the .cdi
3)use ISOBuster to get the files out of the bin
4)Using IPBIN4WIN, create an IP file which corresponds to the game. It normally needs to be pointing at the 1st_read.bin file, or perhaps a different file if it is a WinCE game. A WinCE game can be detecting by checking if it has a 'WinCE' directory on the CD. If so, make sure you take this in to account when creating the IP file.
5)Now you'll need a tool called 'mkisofs'. It is included in the selfboot toolkit. Create an ISO from the files you have extracted, and the IP.BIN in the root directory. Make sure you use an offset of 0,0 *NOT* 0,11700.
6)simply use bin2boot on the iso

this is the working, tested method circulating right now. some people claim, that after step three, you can just go straight into CDRWIN and pick "build an iso image", then go straight to bin2boot - this in fact, does work...but some people have reported occasional problems with the latter method.

now, these new dcs haven't gotten full market penetration yet. many stores have an inventory that includes dcs from before christmas. these newer dcs are mostly appearing in small European stores, and in some Wal-Marts in America. walking into your local electronics store, as of today, you have about a 70% chance that you will be lucky and get the old kind.

okay, i think i win a trophy or somehting for actually posting a useful reply in these forums....mabye all of your firstborn children will suffice.

wal-mart has regional distributors that keep inventories. "new" boxes don't necessarily reflect recent production. simple really.

this is a proven thing, no reason to argue about it. its point-in-fact. not based on my personal experiences (although, i have seen these myself. the electronics store i work at got a few in last week [black outter box, new dates on the stickers], but it'll take a coupla weeks to sell our older ones anyway)

of course, its just a simple bios flash. and its very easy to fix, if you just follow the directions above.
