DVD or CD?

Just a general question - how can you tell if a PS2 game needs to be backed up on CD or DVD? Or do they all need to be backed on DVD to make a complete working backup?

Depends on the game, theres A LOT of PS2 games that you can backup on CDs, ... I myself prefer to back them up on DVDS.

If the base of your original disc is Silver, back it up to DVD-R
If the base of your original disc is Blue, back it up to CD-R

Most are Silver (DVD) and need to be put on DVD-R.

awesome, thanks! Does it being a CD or DVD affect the PS2's laser differently? And can anyone suggest good CDR media to use for PS2's?

It also says it on the disc, like it will say DVD-Rom.

I’ve used a few rip kits now because my V4 no longer reads any DVD media good enough, even originals skip, take forever or don’t load at all.

I’ve had the worst luck with automatic kits, one button, make ISO. I don’t know if people are releasing fakes or what is going on but I’ve make like 5 coaster in a row from these kits. The ones where you actually need to read some instructions and work with some apps seem to work better, plus you learn a few things doing it.

The last 2 auto kits that made coaster ISO’s for me was Ape Escape 2 and Summer Heat Beach Volleyball.
Summer Heat, I then ripped it myself with ISOBuster to extract the files and make the LBA Path FILELIST.TXT file. Then I used Filereplacer to replace all the movie PSS files will a dummy PSS from another kit ( the movies were just trailers for other games anyway ). Now I had a game that was only around 350MB. I used EAPATCH to patch the IOPR*.IMG file, and DVDcheck remover to scan and patch the SLUS file. Finally CDGENPS2 to build the ISO from the Filelist.txt. Burned onto a CDR and works great.
