Duo voltage

busy looking at the install diagrams for my newly acquired Duo chip and would like to use a better Power point than shown on the diagram. Is the Duo 3.3v or 5v ? I know of alternates in both voltages but need to know which the chip is.
Many thanks

if you have a multi-meter you can find multiple alternative locations - I rarely stick to the ones in install diagrams.

some people use the fuses for voltage but i am a bit weary of that... could blow the fuse..

Mainly because they are to far away from where I place the chip and I always keep my wires as short as possible.

If you have seen any of my installs either on my site or on other forums you would see what I mean - ground, power, and CD/DVD controller points are taken from the closest possible location but most of the rest are as per the install diagrams.

only problem is as a result I get a stack of PM's about "why are your install points different..." "are mine wrong..." etc - confuses the poor newbies...

not intentionally of course - and after a few tries I manage to convince most of them that it is ok to trust the manufacturers install points

thanks!

I started to realise I was writting the same stuff over and over for people with questions and decided it would be easier in the end to compile as much as possible into some help pages.

I get a few thousand hits on my help pages a month - so I must be helping at least a few people!

only wish I had a fraction of that number as actual customers - but hey - I like the idea of helping - good karma and all that!

Plus since my hosting company suddenly increased bandwidth allowances to 5GB / day I have no problems as long as the free help does not exceed that amount!

How do you tell the volt on alternate spots.

Do you have to turn the ps2 on somehow so u can tell the volts with a meter?

No that is not needed - normally just using a multi-meter on resistance / continuity mode is enough - you just check for points that are joined i.e. 0 ohms.

the thicker tracks are a good indication of those carrying ground and power. As is the top left and top right chip leg for most chips.

But I only advise this for those who know what they are doing.

OMG. I tried to install a Duo last month. But was unable to use the Power point shown. So i used a alternate power from a Messaih pic. The chip didn't work...i assumed it was bad.
I did this cause i couldn't find alternate power pics for the Duo chip. I had no idea these chips used different volts.

Does anyone have alternate 5 volt pics, for version 7 PS2?

m2 runs off a 3.3 volt and it wont start up. Its easy to bugger up the resistors whilst solderingi know ive just accidently took one off hehe.
