Slow speed while ripping?
Hi! Right now i'm ripping my very first DVD9 disk with DVD Shrink 3.1 and AnyDVD. Its Encoding right now, and the status is:
Decryption Status: Not Encrypted Rate: 841 KB/s Buffered: 53 MB Time Remaining: 2 hours 6 minutes But the "Buffered" keeps changing, and sometimes drops to under 1 MB, what does this mean? My question is, ain't a rate at 841 KB/s very low? I have a P3 700 with 384 SDRAM, I don't now if this has to do with it, but what can i do to make it go faster? I should maybe add that i'm comprimising it pretty hard... about 70% in main movie, and 50% in some menus... This is because i don't want to get rid of the menus, and there where no audiostreams besides the English.

your computer is indeed a bit slow, it buffers because the data cannot be written on hdd fast enough. do you have DMA for both HDD and DVD enabled? Are they on the same IDE cable?

I have 2 disks on Primary IDE Channel, and both in Ultra DMA Mode. On Secondary IDE Channel I only have the DVD writer. The Device manager tells me this about the Secoundary Master (where the DVD writer is):
Transfer Mode: DMA if available Current transfer Mode: PIO Mode Should i be able to use DMA on my DVD writer? I guess that i should convert the disk to NTFS instead of FAT32 alsow... will do that when i leave it the next time... Ok, so the buffer is to high, thats probebly because of slow harddrive (maybe we can make it a bit faster), but what about the Rate? Is that alsow low because of this? Shuld i have the disks and the DVD writer on diffrent IDE channels? i'm not sure from wich disk i will burn the most, or put my DVDs...

your dvd-drive runs in PIO-mode. thats not good, it should run in DMA-mode. this should be the cause for that slow ripping speed.
Also converting the HDDs from FAT32 to NTFS will make things easier for you (e.g. no 4GB limitation for files and more) To set your dvd drive in DMA mode try the steps: - check if DMA access is enabled in the BIOS (should be enabled or AUTO) - if this doesnt work, completely remove the 2nd IDE channel from the device manager and reboot. It'll re-detect the devices and hopefully now enable DMA access. your current setup (hdds on chain 1, dvd writer on chain 2) is perfectly ok. leave it at that.

i got a slightly faster setup (pentium 3 - 1080mhz, 512mb ram) and need about 1 hour for a backup (that includes ripping, re-encoding and burning).

ok! i checked the settings in BIOS... It turns out that the setting for both my disks says:
PIO Mode: 4 Ultra DMA Mode: 4 And windows indicates that those disks are using Ultra DMA Mode. But when i come to the DVD writer, it says: PIO Mode: 4 Ultra DMA Mode: 2 And beside this info there is a text: WARNING: Ultra DMA mode 3/4 can be enabled only when BIOS detects shielded 80-pin cable. I thought i had one of thouse, but i'll guess i have to go down to the store later an get one? So can I convert the disk to NTFS in the meantime

you dont need a 80 pin cable for your dvd drive.
the maximum transfer rate is DMA mode 2, for which a 40 pin cable is sufficient. did you try the trick with deleting the 2nd IDE bus from the device manager and let windows redetect it?

hi! realy sorry, forgot about that totaly when i read that warning in the BIOS... so, now i deleted the two controllers and reboted. Windows found them, and wanted me to reboot. when it booted up the secound time, i checked the settings, and it was set to PIO only. I changes this, and ofcourse, rebooted. NOW, after 3 reboots, it finds the DVD writer as "Ultra DMA Enable" !
Thnx a lot mate! Sometimes i don't think at all on the most ovious things... I'll try to recode another movie just to see if there is a diffrence... Thnx again!

Ok... so i'm encoding the same movie again... now the rate is about 1,150 KB/s wich is way better, but is it good? and the buffer is about the same... between 0 and 60 MB so far... Maybe it will help converting the disk to NTFS...
But i read that many DVD writers are locked at 2X or 2.4X CSS ripping speed... has this anyting to do with it? or maybe it's just that my CPU have a pain in the ass shrinking it...

I dont know if the NEC is limited in ripping speed. Easy way to find out: rip a dvd to your hdd (e.g. with DVDDecrypter) and take a look at the speed.
Hacked firmwares often eliminated these limits.

ok, i installed DVD Decrypter and started ripping... right now the speed is 2.0x, but it seems to be diffrent in diffrent files... on another file i got 3.5x... now its 2.2x, and it doesn't seem to be locked... but ain't this pretty slow if it ain't locked? it may depend on my IBM 120gb 7200rpm with FAT32, i don't know... now it's on 2.4x...

Get the latest hacked firmware here . It removes the rip speed limitation and will make your drive region free.
