Help -CD Writer will not support Win 2000

I have a HP Kayak worksattion , with a HP9300i cd writer......
I wanted to backup the system data on a CD for safety in the event of a window problem...I use Windows 2000 pro.....can be good, but one never knows......
As per HP and many more people they say there is no CD writer that can backup the system data to a CD.......WHY NOT.
This is done all the time.......I need help
Can I get a new software for the HP9300i or is there a CD WRITER that will work with Windows 2000?
