Basically its just that some chips were being claimed to have burnt out the PS2's. Many claimed it was the Messiah 2 but now many claim its just the PS2 itself. Because Sony has used cheaper matierials in making the motherboard and componants. People without mods say their ps2 burnt out on its own.
But as of recently I haven heard of any bad luck stories with any v9's anymore. Quite a few members here have either Messiah 2 or DMS3 v9/10 chips in their v9 ps2's and still claim to be using them without problems. So my advice is have a pro install your chip for you and make sure he/she warrenties it at least for a little while. Tyler!

The problem is much more common with pal units as well. I wouln't let this scare you away from modding a v9.

Hmm... interesting. Just reading through all the stuff here, I was kind of shying away from a v9 and thinking about getting a Magic V 5K6 for the v10 instead. I was planning on getting the v9 with the DMS3 but then kinda became undecided after hearing the bad things about the v9. And I still am undecided. So you guys don't think people should shy away from the v9? I guess, how is anyone to know that the v10 wouldn't be worse, right?
Another thing that is factoring into my decision is that, how can people say that Magic "has its act together" just based on a few weeks with the 5K6? If it were gonna cause problems with the console, I'd think three weeks isn't much to judge that on. Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about though... If anyone could tell me what they would choose to do, I'd appreciate it! v10 w/ Magic V 5K6... or... v9 with DMS3... what's a guy to do?!

my v9 died with a magic V chip installed it last alil while then when watching a movie it died. I dont know if it was the chip or i had my movies on princos dvd-rs but the guy is redoing another unit for me a v9 with a dms3 costing me 20$
 i spent so much alrdy on the new system 112$ for the shiping chips and nonsence i should had kept my apple and said to hell with the new games that had 2x toc. I have not heard any storys of dms3's killing v9's just messiah 2's and magics so i hope my dms3 last and to be safe i will use my v7 to play my dvds from now on  reason i used the ps2 cause my cheap ass apex dvd player plays moives with stupid video com even when i take that carp out when ripping it its still there and theres no way to trun it off some moives play fine and others like x-men 2 has video com on my dvd player. and i read on newz some say that cheap media overheats the laser and kills the ps2 and i was useing cheap media on my dvd movies but we may never know the real reason of the v9's dieing.
