Very carefully.

Take out the black screws. then gently lift the top off, taking in consideration the power/eject ribbon. I normally just flip the top in the direction of the power/eject ribbon.

Thats basically how you open it. Unfortunatly we cannot post large pics here so a more detailed explanation is quite hard to follow.

Tyler!

Is the laser lens the small blue pointlike lens which can be seen when the cover is taken off? How do you clean it?

Why do you want to take it apart?
For cleaning the laser?
Install modchip?

EDIT:
However, be very careful with the eject/power ribbon, quite easy to break that one....

Once you are ready to put it back together and find some ribbons difficult to put back in, you may want to invest in a pair of hemos
to get the lil rascals back in. I took mine apart to find out why it would not play any video and found one of the ribbons came loose. Man you talk about a pain to put it back together. I tried needle-nose pliers and it was still tough. Since then I bought a pair of hemos from the fishing section of a local store (they sell these to unhook fish) and it made the job a lil easier.

Thanks Sean, Been out since the holidays, playing around with the X-Box and let me tell ya, Its nice...Great graphics and well it doesnt take the place of the PS2, as the ps2 has way better game selections but its a great game console, none the less.

Also been working with the ever so loved Roxio 6 Easy CD DVD Creator, you told me about, and have been making some home video dvd's. Excellent program once I figured out how to work it.
