DVD to AVI/VCD

Hi.

I want to make backup copies of DVD's but i havent got a DVD burner till crimbo day but i do have a DVD player and someone on the net said i can still do it in VCD form! I got CloneDVD and DVD converter but can not figure out what i'm doing! I also need to split the image file that i created in CloneDVD. Also, i have a problem! When i try and use the image DVD converter it was just about to start and it gave me to errors cant remember the first but the second said something about MPEG2! If someone can point me in the right direction of doing this right it would be geat!
