Getting RSOD on 2 different ps2s

I've modded 2 different PS2's, both with the Magic 3.1, yet I'm always getting the red screen of death, except with original ps2 games. I'm sure it's not a laser issue, as they both worked perfectly pre-modding, and I've checked wires but can't seem to find a fault. Is there anything in particular I should look out for? The fact that I'm getting it with 2 different model PS2s seems like I'm probably doing the same thing wrong on both.

They're silver imports, I'm sure they work.

But at the moment only original ps2 games work. When I try to play a DVD it says "DVD player not set up". Has anyone come across this before?

It's happened with both a V5 and V7 PS2, same problem. I can the hear the disc spinning up, but then it just goes to the red screen and says insert ps1 or ps2 disc or whatever it is.

The best fing to do is try ur backups on a different modded ps2 and varify they work, then get hold of a dvd-r backup an check it works on yours befor u go rippin things apart again.

Regards
