The laser could just be dirty. Try a cleaning disc.

You could try adjusting the laser, get a replacement laser, or sell it and buy a new ps2.

Dude, get a new ps2. A v1 is soooo outdated its silly. Youll spend more in time and repair $$ than you would if you just got a new ps2.

v3 still sucks. If possible adjust the laser so it is in working order and sell it.

V1 to 4 are pretty much the same lasers ( Junk ), I know but sum of us poor folks gotta put up with em’.
It is worth trying a few things, you did the lens cleaning thing, That’s always a first. You can also try and blast some dust out with a can of air, remove the black cover around the lens first. Easiest way to adjust, take off the drive cover and pop out the white hub thing, to use it later. the tray has 2 screws holding it on the left side, remove them and slide the tray out. Now remove the screw holding down the right sled rod and you should be able to lift the laser out and flip it back without disconnecting anything, careful of the film ribbon. If you have a tester, test the CD POT, write down the value of the top 2 contact pads on each. The 2 adjustments on the back of the laser, the left (facing with ribbon on top) is for the CD probably around 1200 ohms, turn it clockwise til’ about 800-900 Ohms. The right one is for DVD, should be turned to about 750 ohms. No tester, just turn a little bit clockwise 1/16 turn or less at a time and test (no more than 1/8 total – remember where it was! Best to have tester! Flip the laser back down in place with the rod snapped back in ( no need to screw it down till you’re done adjusting) and test with a CD in place, drop the white hub on top of the CD to hold it and see if it works any better. One last thing to try after cleaning is the parallax adjustment. It’s the white gear on the top. Fasten your laser sled back down, mark the gear where it meats the metal on the left side. Try adjusting 1/8 turns ( probably counter clockwise ). Some say this does wonders, I found it does next to nothing for a good half turn. For a good Idea where it goes try adjusting while playing music or movie, all the way one direction until skipping starts and back the other way until skipping starts, leave it around the center of those two points. Also, make sure the gear is tight and clicking good, I think this adjustment affects the outer tracks/files more than the inside tracks of a CD. Replace laser unit only after trying all of that. You might go and buy a new laser only to find out it was the parallax gear that was off! |

If you had enough cash to buy the tools to test everything that ihaveanosebleed just finished saying, then you are already pretty much as close to buying a new ps2. New ps2s only cost $179 US. Plus you wont have to worry about your new ps2 for a long time.
Another point is that, if you mess up doing what was said in the earlier posts you wont be able to get as much out of selling your used ps2. Just sell it as Biggie says and get a new one. No worries. Tyler!

LOL, If you can’t get your hands on a $20 tester and a 50 Cent screwdriver, your worse off than me, and that’s pretty bad!!

Not to mention the $60 + shipping laser you would have to buy after a novice tried to adjust the laser. Heck thats not including all the wasted time and energy spent on befuddling with an outdated and barely working piece of equipment.
Just do a laser cleaning, sell the thing, and your all set. Still laughing ihaveanosebleed? Tyler!

Whatever.
I still think its a huge waste of time and effort to fix ps2 lasers. Even if you fix them they wont last too much longer. Tyler!

yo ihaveanosebleed, is there a diagram that shows you how to clean the PS2 from the inside. I opened up my PS2, took the lid off but that's it. I didn't dare do anything else fearing that i'll mess something up.
Thanks dude for your info...
