noisey ps2 for CD games

Firstly thanks for everyones help over the past two weeks - I've had a Messiah 2 installed and my old pc has a A03 from ebay (for £85 with delivery), and I've successfully backed up somes DVD and CD games (no coasters either ;-)).

However, I notice when I play CD games the ps2 is bloody noisey! DVD games and backups are fine, as it would appear are PS1 CD games and backups.

PS2 Cd and cd backups are very noisey though. is this normal. My PS2 is about 1 month old and think its a version 7.

Mine is the same. DVD's are quiet as a mouse. CD games are much noisier and 80min dvd rips sound like they are grinding against something

Although since I've had my A05, it's been bye bye to dvd rips

Same for me too, except no grinding just clicking LOUD.... I also have recently purchased a DVD Writer and have found that the quiet is well worth the extra money for DVDs

it could just be the laser struggling to read that particular (dye-type) brand of cd-r media... what brand are you using? are they the same brand as the ps1 cd-r backups you mentioned?

its probbly the laser. Try using some better media such as ritec for dvdr and verbatim for cdr.

ED!
The PS2 is reading the rip contents out of their normal order which is why you're getting all that action. Appearantly (and I think you can find the orignal post here), when a game is ripped, the contents are "remixed" so to speak, so that they dont sit in the original order, so I guess the ps2 has to go and find that out of order data - hence the excruciating sounds eminating from your PS2.

FINALLY!!

Sometimes I get tired of repeating myself. Thank you ED! for posting this info. I have stated this many times before.

Here is what happens:

Most dvd game files are put in an order for best laser tracking. Not all games are like this though. GTA for one is a game that requires the entire disc for gameplay. Thus it gets some of the worst noise when it is ripped onto a cdr.

When ripping a game you can put the game back into the same order of the orginal dvd allowing for less noise on a cd laser. On the other hand some game makers were lazy and didnt put the dvd game together in a proper order in the fist place so you still may wind up with a noisy dvdrip cd game.

Yeah, original cd games can either still be out of a good order from stock or the game just runs in a manner that needs the entire disc to play.
