Sega announced that they will be producing a new line of DreamCast consoles, remade against piracy. These new models will have protection against the playing back of CD-R. They decided a change of hardware because the current DCs could play games burnt to CD-R with the use of a special software. As a side effect, MIL CDs are now also no longer useable in the new DCs.

Sega has already begun retailing these new DCs from the beginning of the "Limited Edition Sakura Wars" set, which was released December 28, 2000.

Yes I know its old news but the question is, how do we identify if a DC console can play CD-R's? If I went into a shop and looked at the boxes of DC's how would I tell if they are the anti-pirate versions? Are there any descriptions on the boxes / on the console. I may buy a DC but I need to know if it can play CD-R's.

They are modifying the bios to check whether the Drive contains a GDROM or a CDROM. The chip walks around this protection!

Stop worrying, there is always a way round something.

If they (SEGA) ever pull off the protected DC then they will see a serious drop in sales. Why do you think that Sony made it harder, but not impossible? It stops the average Joey from chipping the PSone, but a pro can still do the biz!
