dreamcast ripping..?

okay after seeing a few posts on this site it made me think... back when i first got into the DC scene.. umm.. like in july/august I heard that KALiSTO and like ECHELON or whoever ripped games with their own stolen Yamaha burner specific to the Dreamcast "CD" format. Is this true? Do they just rip regular games on a regular cd rom? cuz if they don't use the stolen burner, then why can't some1 come up with a ripper? (captain obvious i know)
