I've encountered the same problem. But now, I can get the game to boot, but it's not playable, veeeeeeerrrrrryyyyyyyssssssslllllloooooooowwwwwww, anyway, this is the setup that I have, my "HDIMAGES" folder, is in my Mameox folder. Here's my setup
f:\emulators\arcade\HDIMAGES\KINST\kinst.chd f:\emulators\arcade\Roms\kinst.zip ALSO!!!! The game will only work on this MameoX Version 0.71.1b The newer release, 0.71.2b says it's out of memory. So if you want to watch Killer Instinct, lmao, use MameoX version 0.71.1b Hope that helps!
