Buy a new one, put the dead on in the box, take it back to the store you bought your new one and say: "Hi, I would like my money back for this dead XBox, I bought it here yesterday and it will not turn on." And if they give you any BS about it, say "Well this isnt the first dead XBox I've bought from here blah blah..."

Honestly, I've never heard of a "stock" Box doing that. It usually means it has a bios error after somebody flashed it wrong/bad but I'm sure you would never do anything like that.

I'm not a lawyer (and don't play one on TV either) BUT I would guess that repackaging a different item in a box and returning it would be fraud. I'm not sure but I would only do that at your own risk.

Well I think thats a conscience thing. If I had an un-opened XBox and was past my 90 day warranty and had to pay Microsoft to fix it, I would do what I said in my first reply in a flash. Its not hurting the store, they will just to a new one from their dealer and the dealer will just send it back to Microsoft for a refund.

Like I said, thats a conscience thing all the way. Some people say "testing" DirecTV is illegal, but I do not, and neither do alot of other people I know.

Well I don't wanna start a philosophical debate on legalities but the law doesn't really care about a persons conscience. If I kill someone it doesn't matter if I am sorry or liked it - it's still illegal.

I don't know all the laws on testing either but I know for a fact people can go to jail or be fined for it.

I don't even know or care what kermit does - I just thought it should be mentioned.

Well who ever told you that is wrong. They cant put you in jail and they cant fine you unless they can prove you "stole" their sigal. For the most part they have never been able to prove Joe Blow down the street is "stealing" their sigal just b/c he bought a programmer and has a dish on his roof, but they have been trying like hell. And they will continue to fail in court until the FCC changes its laws on brodcast sigals.

Now its really all a dark area. DirceTV says its illegal all though they have never been able to prove them selfs in the every day court case. They have been able to get some of the very big hardware makers and dealers only b/c how they market their stuff like the way they do.

Well a local here was busted last month just for possession of satellite equipment and DTV said he will be fined almost $100,000 since that's about how much service he had been "testing" for them for a number of years. He probably wishes you were the judge.

I'm willing to bet with a fine like that, he was was either a hardware dealer and or doing ALOT of cards. And I'm also willing to bet DirecTV didn't win in court, the guy setteld with them.

I've been following all this the first letter was in some one mail box and he/she reported it to the DSSU Forums. And alot of times its just easier to settle with them than it is to battel it out in court. DirecTV has a bit more money to blow on lawyers than Joe Blow.

From what I remember reading awhile ago, DirecTV is wanting 10g for every peace of hardware and card you have, most people settle for like $3,500.

Now if I ever got a letter and was told to settle or go to court, I would tell DirecTV to kiss off and go to court and have them prove that I'm using my programmer to "steal" their signal. There are many other uses for the programmers out there than to just reprogram their cards. Hell you can lock your PC with a smart card. Whos to say I'm not using it for that? And if I did get a letter, watch how fast all my PCs, cards, programemrs, IRDs vanish to a firend's house for about 6 months.

But really, if I local was nailed for that, I'm willing to bet he settled with them rather than fighting it out in court. It could easy cost him more than 100g just in lawyer fees in that kinda court case.
