GameShark 1.3 w/o Modchip ?

I won't make this complicated.

I have a GameShark2 version 1.3 My PS2 is NOT modchipped in any way. I have made a backup copy of NHL Hitz 2001 and have yet been able to boot it w/o making the system freeze.

My PS2 is (I believe) version 1 2 or 3... i have 10 screws on the bottom, its a SCPH 30001 and the serial starts U214****

Just wondering the proper method for booting this game or others with my setup.

Help!
