Get the latest firmware here. Also get ASPI 4.6 from here. Also set your burner as master if it isn't already.

Running External?

My burner is currently Primary Slave, does that really make a difference? My CD burner is secondary master.

I was thinking of getting an external USB 2.0 box to throw it in. Would you recommend this? Why or why not?

And if so is there anything extra I will have to do?

Thanks.

Switch your dvd burner to secondary master and cd burner to primary slave. This can usually solve recognition probs.

NTi CD/DVD Burner

I am using NTI CD/DVD burner and it seems to work fine. Simple disc copy, I have not tried to do it on the fly, and it works for DVD games. one of the few pieces of software that easily recognized my burner. No firmware hacking or anything.

My burner does not seem to read certain DVD blands. Is this due to the firmware? What could cause this?

-Mark

PS Also discovered that my PS2 can read DVD-RWs

A different firmware will usually solve the media problem.

Firmware Questions

I heard that changing the firmware can kill a drive if you do it wrong. Or maybe that was flashing it. Can you give me a quick explanation on what flashing does and what changing the firmware would gain me? I got NERO 6 and it will work with my burner but the burnt games won't play just like with my other software. I have not yet tried Primo DVD but I am trying to get my burner to work with Record Now Max... it saw my burner as a reader before I upgraded to the newest engine, now it doesnt see my burner at all.

What are the risks involved with changing the firmware and will it really solve my problem? Media is not the problem it is recognition.

It would help if you tried some of our recommendations first. Did you switch it to master? Did you get ASPI 4.6(NOT 4.7)? Have you done anything?

Yes

Yes I have put it on my secondary master, yes I installed ASPI 4.6, yes I reinstalled all of my burner software and yes I have the latest patches and updates for all of them.

Knowing that, see above for the status, let me know if a firmware change is really worth it or if I should just buy a different drive, perhaps not a multiformat one.

If so, what is a good DVD-R/-RW brand to go with for burners?

Firmware wouldn't change the ability to recognize your drive. If you change your firmware you losse any warranty you have. It is really up to you. I personally think the ability to record to +r/+rw is pointless and would have got a -r/-rw drive in the first place. The Pioneer A05 is an excellent choice. The price has dramatically dropped due to the release of the multiformat A06 being released. You can get one for $180-$190. I recommend www.harmonycomputers.com That is where I bought my A04 from. Great company and very fast.
