External All Purpose Writer
I'm looking for a device I can bring around with me from site to site and for home that reads DVD's and CD's and is a DVD & CD writer. It must be of good quality, and must be external.
I have been reviewing some magazines I have and some websites on the formats with RW+ and RW-. Its a lot to take in at first. I'm looking forward to this device however! But I want to make sure with the proper software I can back up CD's as well as DVD's if need be. For now it will mainly be backing up large amount of files from place to place and saving some video I have. Can you provide me with *YOUR* suggestions (based on you having more experience in this field than I currently have) on such a device?

The external Pioneer A05 is an excellent choice. You can get one on ebay for $219.

Latest Plextor model may also need considering - writes 8x for DVD+R and 4x for DVD-R
Plextor are reknowned for quality...and it looks great

The "Plextor EXTERNAL PX-504UF 4X/2.4X/12X DVDWRITE/DVD-REWRITE/DVD-READ" is in the $300 range which is doable for me. I couldnt find the Pioneer on pricegrabber but on pricewatch I found a "PIONEER DVR-A05 External (USB 2.0) 4X DVD-R/RW, 16X8X32X CD-R/RW with Software" for about $230.
THATS A PRETTY BIG PRICE DIFFERENCE! My next thing while looking for a write is finding software that will allow me to work, edit, convert formats, and such for video to DVD so I can play it in DVD players of hopefully all types. That requires more research, but its all fun! Thanks for your help THUS far... :-)

Get yourself DVD Movie Factory 2. It works great for editing and converting movies.

Damn didn't see the Plextor.... Got a Pioneer A06 External. Only 4X.... oh well, it's a Pioneer....I'm happy
