Coming soon...

PERFECT SERIES PRESENTS

Title: Shenmue with Japanese speech
Region: EURO/PAL JPN/NTSC
Mode for PAL DC: 50/60 Hz
Modifications: English -> Japanese speech (see notes)
Filename: PS-SHNJ1.0xx/0??
PS-SHNJ2.0xx/0??
PS-SHNJ3.0xx/0??
PS-SHNJ4.0xx/0??

Notes:

Not a genuine rip but done for fun. English speech was replaced with Japanese speech, retaining English subtitles. This was a tiresome process but seems to work seamlessly. I think the Japanes voice acting is much better than the English, and this release now "matches" Shenmue II.

</nfo>

Only disc one is complete so far, this is a time consuming process so please don't ask about release times etc. I also need to test the entire game all the way through.

Just so you know it's coming!

Nice!

I can't wait and yes I do agree with you, the JAP voices are alot better than the dronish/emotionless English voice acting.

Do the voices synchronise with the lip movements?

Also is "weezee" the mediator for the release?

Unfortunately the lip sync is still based on the English speech. This would have been an impossible task. The lip sync data is contained in the same files as the subtitles, and it would have simply been impossible because no two files match up exactly. There were bits and pieces added to the US release and bits taken out as well as small changes to dialogue, so it's not perfect, but from what limited Japanese I know, they are saying the right thing at the right time most of the time.

About releasing, I'm not going to upload these myself. No freaking way. So I will try to organise something with weezee or whoever, but we must keep that stuff private and off the boards for legalities sake.

I figured the voices wouldn't be in sync with the lips because I read a while back when Sega were translating the game that they had to reanimate the lips to match the new english speech which allowed for more flexibility in the translation.

Not only that, they changed several conversations. So that Ryo and the people he's talking to occasionally say sentences in English, and sometimes the Japanese speech doesn't match the subtitle.

It's a shame, but nothing is perfect. You really don't notice the lip sync much since it wasn't exactly very sophisticated in the first place. All cut scenes so far in the game play very nicely.

EDIT: Sorry guys, but I am cancelling this project. After playing the game some more I realise that the free quest speech is more mixed up than I'm willing to accept. It's a shame because the cut scenes work very nicely. As a note of trivia, the Japanese version seems to have quite a lot more dialogue than the English translation. Can't wait to play it in a few years when I'm fluent in Japanese, so I can get the full story!

Darkfalz, I'm still here. I'm just too XBOX-busy/DC-lazy to try the Maken-X thing (I've read your docs, but it seemed more difficult than my laziness expected). I'd prefer to finish with CD3 & 4 of Shenmue, before passing on that.

Heh, same here, also too much DC-lazy and Xbox busy.. but its cuz there isnt really anything interesting comin on DC anymore (get over here KOf2k2!).

Anyway the Shenmue project sounded like a great idea.. i adored shenmue 2's speech more than Shenmue 1's which wasn't on hotd2 levels but not on soul reaver levels either. Have-you-seen-a-black-car? I never played the jp version of shen1 but i assume its voice acting should be like Shen2.

Is there any chance that you could release just the passport disc with Japanese speech and have it read both the US and PAL saves?

Thanks for trying with the game discs too. It would have been great!

Sounds like it should be good.
