PS2 problems

I'm having problems with my ps2 giving me a disc read error. The unit has gotten slower in the last several months at startup, taking it forever to load. This last week it started to freeze during gameplay and you had to restart it, now it will not read at all. I was interested in getting my ps2 inspected by someone recommended by this site and possibly having it installed with some mods because I have 2 young boys that play the system and I don't know if they have messed something up or what. thanks for any help!

Have you tried a lens cleaner? That would be a good place to start.

The DVD unit is either in need of cleaning (dirty lens), or dying (Sony lasers are notoriously bad). Start with a cleaning disc, see if that helps, and if not... sadly, you'll need either a new laser or a new PS2. If it's less than a year old, Sony warranties it (so don't open it up yet!). If it's more than a year old, you can get new lasers for $50 or so... but may not be brave enough to install it yourself.

I believe the ps2 warranty is only 90 days.

Thanks for the feedback! I will try the lens cleaner and see what happens, also I noticed that the ps2 wouldn't play any dvd's before I started having freezing problems with the console. The ps2 I have is over 2 years old, I think it's a early version 4. To Seven O To I do have yahoo mess.
