In most cases you don't need to patch. You only need to patch if you are converting a pal game to ntsc or vice versa. Or if the game has a mod chip check.

A mod chip is a chip, go figure, that allows you to play backups and imports on your psx. Some games have a feature that can detect non stealth mod chips, as a result it won't let you play game.
