Depends on what version PS2 you have.....

V5-V8 you should be ok....

V1-V4..... FORGET IT.......

Also will depend on what brand of DVD+R.......

The reflectivity of the disc has a GREAT deal to do with it......

Get Riteks...... There is nothing better.....

Verbatim DVD+R

I have over 15 backups of games using verbatim DVD+R with a 3.0 magic chip V-7, I have problems with Metal Gear Solid (SOL), keeps freezing between boards, but this is most likely due to the magic 3.0 chip , all the other backups work pretty much flawlessly, from time to time i get the browser screen when loading but nothing frustrating. Just try it with a couple before you buy a whole batch, hehe

No offense BG, but...

My V4 runs Verbatim +R copies flawlessly.

Verbatim makes killer +R discs, I have no complaints about them. They have like 8 layers on them, and are heavy as hell - but are of outstanding quality. I can usually get them at around $2 each, anything better than that is an excellent deal indeed.

In general v1-v3 won't play +r. Most of the time a v4 won't play +r but it does work for some.

Yep. It's all up in the air. I'd say that v4 is maligned more often than not.

In fact, unless someone has actual scientific evidence (aka they've compared the parts directly) and isn't just relying on hearsay... I'd wager that 99% of the v4's reputation for having a bad laser is due to the fact that 99% of v4 owners bought a Neo chip. I know I did. Back then the Messiah was close to $100 and required 40+ points, whereas the Neo2.5 was $25 and required 5 points.

I've been lucky that my laser wasn't eaten alive by the Neo - largely because I just didn't play that many PS2 copies over the last year and a half - mostly I used the chip to play my old PSX backups.

But let's say I _had_ played a lot of PSX backups... well then, my v4 would be no good for reading DVD+R, just like all the v1-v3 are.

AND it's still luck of the draw. Some v5's don't play +R either.

Anyway, anyone who can hook me up with a new laser (preferably a v5 or higher unit) cheaply for use when this v4's one expires (any time now), please PM me.
