Pads?

Hello all...

I have a quick question:

Is it much safer to Solder to the pads underneath the board rather than to those tiny legs on the chip? Or no?

I don't have a steady hand to try the legs directly =)

Could use a little more information on this one, but i'll assume a bit here. I think you are talking about the cd\dvd controller(the square chip) not the bios chip(rectangular). Most installs on later versions call for you to solder to the pads underneath the chip as this is safer and easier then soldering directly to the chip. What chip are you trying to install? Whats version PS2 do you have? Where did you get your install diagrams?

Probably safer to do the pads, but that of course involves routing wires under the board.

Safer and a hell of a lot easier to use the pads and you'll avoid bridging chip legs etc.

U should always where possible avoid soldering directly to chip legs. Some parts of modchip installs can't get round it but where u have an alternative use it.

When routing wires to the other side of the motherboard try to keep the wires a short as possible. If ur soldering to the pads underneath the cd/dvd controller chip there should be a hole through the motherboard just to the right of the chip that u can route all the wires through.

That is the bios chip and I don't know of any alternate solder points for the four wires that have to go on to the chip. But these are alot easier than the ones on the older versions where you have to solder opn to the CD\DVd controller. Hope you have the proper soldering iron. If you do these points shouldn't be that bad. Take your time to get the wire lined up just right and barely touch it. To much pressure could push solder solder to the side and casue a bridge, but this would be an extreme case as there is barely enough solder on the point to reach the next. Take your time and you'll be just fine. Best of luck to you.

GOD the last time I had to solder direct to the CD/DVD controller I had to wick up all the solder and redo it like 5 times. BLEH!

The BIOS is easy to solder to, just use a fine tip and be careful. If you don't have a steady enough hand... err... don't do MODding yourself.

Also if you are unsure of your hand there is a very good tip, detailed in the messiah install guide. Basically it involves a razor blade and some blue tack. Blue tack is a putty like substance used to hold posters and the suck to walls without sticking enough to tear. I could not find this so I used silly putty. Place the silly putty away from the chip a liitle ways and use it to hold the razor blade in between the legs of the chip. When you solder push the iron toward the blade and it will prevent solder from spilling over. If you are unsure of yourself this is worth investigating. It would also be a good idea to install the color fix described in the messiah install guide if you plan on playing import games.

Soldering onto the bios chip legs should be no problem as the legs r hyouge.

Ur right Gurm...Soldering onto cd/dvd chip legs on version 4 was a pain in the ass and until they modded the messiah u had to keep the wires super short so couldn't use alternative points until later.

Good luck with installation and remember, loads and loads of liquid flux will sort all problems!
