Why does Self-Boot games work and others don't?

I burned both on the same type of 80min cd's. The selfboot i burned using DJ and others were used with CDRWIN. I tried version 1.1 and 1.2 of the boot disk. Any ideas? Should I make them self-boot or add the dummy file? Thanks.
